Eagles track and field athletes having strong performances

Summerton – The Scott’s Branch High School baseball team was winless in eight games coming out of spring break. The Eagles were outscored 143-16, but you know what? That’s OK.

Why, you ask? Because Scott’s Branch is fielding its first baseball team since 2019. That has head coach Randy Bass keeping things in perspective.

“As far as the season, we have played just a little below where I was hoping we would be, but par for the course since we have the first baseball team since 2019,”Bass said. “We have a team bursting with talent. Our problem is we have to play catch-up as a coaching staff teaching fundamentals, as youth baseball in Summerton stops around the age of 10.

“We have a young team that is progressing greatly, and I am proud to be at Scott’s Branch with great kids and a great coaching staff!”

The Eagles’ best performance came in a 16-11 loss to Clarendon County rival Manning. Bass is already focused on the 2027 season, as one might expect. Scott’s Branch is set to have the entire roster returning except for Zymire Coard.

Bass said sophomore shortstop/starting pitcher Ramon Cruz, sophomore first baseman and closer Sa’Nye Hilton and freshman catcher Kaleb Minger have been the top performers.

“All of these guys have the potential to be Power 5 (college) players with a little more polishing” Bass said. “I look forward to seeing how they can help the team finish the season and how they turn it on next year and progress.”

EAGLES TRACK ATHLETES HAVE GOOD PERFORMANCES

Performers for both of the Scott’s Branch track and field teams have had strong performances in the early portion of the season.

For the girls team, Jernee Ford has finished in first place in both the shot put and the discus on two occasions. Maxfield Traonha won the long jump in a meet.

Those who have second-place finishes in an event are RaKy York in the 400-meter dash, Taraji Logan in the 400 hurdles, and Azari Taylor in the long jump.

Montrell Session has been a standout for the boys team. He had two first-place finishes in the long jump along with a second-place finish. Session also finished second in the 400 in one event.

Quinten Jackson also won the 200 dash in an event. Nazaiah Richardson has finished second in both the 200 and the javelin. Fra’Jon Bennett finished second in the 400 and Matthew Perry finished second in the 400 hurdles.
