Summerville - After an hour weather delay, Pinewood Prep opened its 2026 football season Aug. 14 with a 62-27 victory over visiting First Baptist.
“Overall I’m happy with our effort,” said Pinewood Prep coach DeVonte Holloman. “In Week 1 your tackling can always be better and we know we have some strides to make with our O-line, but as a coach in terms of effort you can’t complain. We (topped) 60 points. First Baptist has a very good offense, but we see we need to work on tackling. The kids played hard.”
Pinewood quarterback Silas Brawner, who has verbally committed to Presbyterian College, completed 20 passes for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore running back Jeremy Kendall topped 100 yards rushing on 14 carries and ran for two TDs. Senior receiver Tre Green had seven receptions for more than 150 yards and two TDs.
Green hauled in TD passes from 42 and 30 yards and had a 38-yard catch to set up another TD. Brawner also connected with senior Heyward Moore for a 29-yard scoring strike. Late in the game, Pinewood backup QB Hunter Gardner connected with junior Mikey Williams for a 38-yard TD pass.
Sophomore Tyler Harper also made some catches and broke a tackle on his way to a 16-yard TD run. Kendall and senior running back Grayson Salego both had a pair of TD runs from inside the 5-yard line.
Moore caught a two-point conversion pass and Kendall had a two-point run.
Defensively Pinewood generated a lot of pressure, leading to multiple sacks and tackles for a loss. Junior Mason Sumners had two sacks and linemen Gavin Spell and Jacob Sweet were big contributors. Nathan Good and Jude Kelly both recovered a fumble for Pinewood.
Considering that pressure, First Baptist QB Gibbs Isom made his share of plays. Joshua Bradley topped more than 100 receiving yards and hauled in a 55-yard TD pass from Isom. Bradley also had two other scores, intercepting a Pinewood pass and returning it 40-plus yards into the end zone and finding pay dirt on a 1-yard TD run.
Isom also had a 15-yard TD pass to Cullen Pratt.
Pinewood hosts Heathwood Hall, which fell just short of claiming the SCISA 4A championship in 2025, at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21.
“They are the runner-up for 4A last year so it’s a big test for us,” Holloman said. “It will be our first 4A match up since we’ve moved up to 4A. Hopefully we can take care of our bodies and have a good week of practice and be ready for it.”
First Baptist travels to Academic Magnet next Friday for its second contest.
