HANAHAN - Anybody who left early in the second quarter when Hanahan High School scored on its third straight drive to go up by three touchdowns missed a heck of a finish at Wiley Knight Stadium Friday night in a clash of Berkeley County School District squads.

Those who stayed - not that many really left - were treated to a thriller. Visiting Philip Simmons continued to fight and gave itself a chance to win with under 20 seconds left. Ultimately, though, the home team held on for a 34-33 victory by denying a 2-point try and recovering the ensuing onside kick.

“This is huge,” Hanahan coach Milan Turner said. “What a roller coaster in terms of momentum and emotion. We go up 21-0 but they storm back. I’m just so proud of our kids. We’ve had to practice inside a lot because of this heat and you don’t get in game shape practicing in an air conditioned gym. We were concerned about cramps and conditioning and that showed up tonight. I told them before the game everybody is going to have to play and help out.”

That included sophomore running back Nevaehus Gourdine, who came on to run hard for the Hawks. Returning senior running backs Isaiah Snodgrass and Xavier Sabback combined for over 1,400 yards and 17 touchdowns as juniors.

Gourdine carried it six straight plays for all 60 yards of Hanahan’s final drive and reached paydirt for the third time on a 6-yard run with 4:37 remaining to put the Hawks up 34-27.

“He’s one of our guys,” Turner said. “We feel good about that running back room. We feel like we’ve got four or five running backs who can do what we need them to do. He’s a guy who has shown those flashes. He’s a guy that’s got the tools. He’s young, so it’s learning the offense and everything that goes with it. Slowly, but surely, he’s done that. We tell them all the time when your number is called it’s time to go perform, and he did tonight.”

The Hawks left the door open with a failed conversion and Philip Simmons moved downfield to score on senior quarterback Hayes Goddard’s third scoring toss, a 35-yarder to freshman Tyrus Alston on third and long with 19.8 seconds remaining in the game.

Philip Simmons went for the win and Goddard rolled right out of the shotgun. However, Hanahan lineman Elijah Mitchell got a finger on a pass headed for the back of the end zone that was ultimately broken up by Hawks defensive back Jesiah Smith.

Hanahan improved to 5-3 all-time against Philip Simmons. The past four games have been decided by a total of 12 points, unfolding much like this one did.

During Hanahan’s hot start, Sabback started the scoring on a short touchdown run barely three minutes into the game. After Philip Simmons dropped some passes on its opening drive, Hanahan struck quickly on junior quarterback Tripp Gallus’s 50-yard strike to junior receiver Quamel Grant with 6:21 left in the opening stanza. Gourdine capped Hanahan’s next drive early in the second quarter on a 1-yard run.

Twenty-one to nothing felt very comfortable but Philip Simmons rallied behind senior running back Omonte Taylor and Goddard. Taylor scored twice in the second quarter on short runs to pull the Iron Horses within 21-14, the second with 95 seconds remaining in the first half.

Defense took hold for a spell in the third quarter. Philip Simmons punted on its first two drives of the second half, while Hanahan punted and tossed an interception. However, Hanahan returner Grayson Mathes took back the Iron Horses’ third straight punt to the Philip Simmons 15 late in the period and Gourdine punched one in with 2:48 left in the third quarter, making it 28-14 for Hanahan.

Goddard was swift to answer, though, finding senior receiver Ashton Kellermann behind the defense for a 49-yard touchdown pass 55 seconds later. The extra point brought the Iron Horses within 28-21.

Following a Hanahan punt, Goddard connected with junior receiver Mauricio Curry on a 30-yard touchdown pass to bring the visitors within 28-27 with under eight minutes left. The Iron Horses tried to keep it for 2 on the extra point but holder Kellerman was strung out and knocked down short.

Gourdine finished off a big night with six straight carries and a touchdown to set the stage for the thrilling finish. Goddard’s last touchdown pass came on third-and-29.

Both teams are on the road Friday, Aug. 28. The Hawks go to Kingstree and Philip Simmons is at Porter-Gaud.

By Rob Gantt Special to the HSSR HANAHAN - Two Berkeley County football programs locked horns in a controlled scrimmage Thursday, Aug. 6, and both team's leaders came away somewhat pleased with what they saw. Hanahan coach Milan Turner and Stratford coach Dennie McDaniel were less concerned with the scoreboard and more focused on the small things as the Hawks and Knights battled on the turf at Hanahan's Hawk's Nest facility by Bowen's Corner Elementary. "I'm very pleased with our effort," McDaniel said. "Our attitude has to get a bit better. We had some plays where we broke down in some stuff. We've just got to get out of our feelings and play the next play. That's a young team for you. We've got some maturing to do. We'll do that in the early part of the season. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good performance for a young team." The Class 5A Knights are replacing quite a few starters off a squad that won 10 games and advanced to the third round of the playoffs in 2025. The Knights figure to be able to build around their front seven on defense. Offensively they were hit hard by graduation, though. In terms of returning impact players, the Class 3A Hawks are in a better situation on offense. They bring back a three-year starter at quarterback in big junior lefty Tripp Gallus (6-5, 231). A few other playmakers are back, too, including receivers Grayson Mathes and Quamel Grant . Turner's bunch finished 6-6 in 2025. "For me, I want to see a physicality and a toughness from our kids," Turner said about the first scrimmage. "I told them before we started. I said be violent between the whistles. We know they're going to make some mistakes and obviously we want to try to minimize those. We want to see things like running to the football, all the things that don't take talent. Those are the things I have to see. If I don't see those, we've got a lot of work to do. I feel like we saw that." During Hanahan's opening set of offensive plays, Gallus hooked up with Mathes for an 81-yard touchdown pass on a tunnel screen and Grant over the middle for an 80-yard scoring strike. Stratford defensive lineman Kermit Davis got the Knights on the board with a sack and fumble return for a tally. When the situational scrimmage moved to red zone work, Knights running back Malachi Breland reached paydirt twice, while quarterbacks Dathan Haywood and Caleb Lott tossed touchdowns to Denzel Lazo and Jayden Lee. The Hawks recorded three scores from the red zone, with running back Xavier Sabback scoring on the ground and Gallus distributing his third and fourth touchdown tosses to Jesiah Smith and Evan Knight. During goal-line possessions, which capped the scrimmage, Breland crossed the goal line for the third time and Haywood hooked up with Tyrese Simmons for a score. Sabback capped the scoring for the Hawks with a touchdown run out of the wildcat formation. Earlier, Stratford defensive back Jayden Judge and Hanahan safety Landon Hubler snagged interceptions. Mathes snuffed out Stratford's first drive with a pick in the end zone. The Hawks host Cane Bay Friday, Aug. 14, in a scrimmage. "Now, it's about shrinking the amount of mistakes," Turner said. "We've got tape of this. We want to identify those mistakes: what were mental errors, what were physical errors and what did us as coaches do. Maybe it was us that didn't put our kids in position to be successful." Stratford suits up in the Moncks Corner Lions Club jamboree Aug. 14 at Berkeley High School. "It's going to be a quick opportunity for us," McDaniel said. "We've only got two quarters but we want to make it as game-like as possible. I want to see us clean up the silly penalties and get better at just playing the next play."
