Vikings football team opens season with 5-1 record

Latta – The Latta High School volleyball team stumbled out of the gate to start this season, losing its first two matches. Those losses for the Class A Vikings came against AAAAA West Florence and AAAA South Florence. That helped them get on a roll.

LHS defeated AAA Dillon in its next match before reeling off eight straight victories in Region 6. That has Latta on the precipice of claiming the region title.

"This group of young ladies has faced its share of adversity and early-season setbacks, but those challenges have pushed us to grow stronger together,” said head coach Genesis Rogers. “The players have really learned how to lean on one another, and their commitment to improving their game every day has been impressive.

“We're focused on continuing that growth by coming together as a team as we fight in one of the toughest (Class) A regions in South Carolina to obtain our first region title in several years."

The Vikings, who are 9-3 overall after a second loss to South Florence, have four region matches remaining but have a magic number of just two to clinch the region crown. Lake View is in second place with a 4-3 region mark.

LHS’ final four region tilts are on the road against Hemingway and Lake View and at home against Green Sea Floyds and Carvers Bay.

Senior outside hitter Madison Stevens is the team’s leading hitter with 141 kills and its top server with 31 service aces. Junior setter Chayse Walters leads in assists with 277, while senior libero Samantha Townsend leads in digs with 187.

The rest of the roster is made up of senior outside hitter Bailey Jordan, senior defensive specialist Lauryn Brumbles, senior defensive specialist Selena Velazquez, junior outside hitter Aniiyah Smiling, junior defensive specialist Madelyn Miller, junior defensive specialist Janah Jones, junior middle hitter Maliyah Bethea, sophomore middle hitter Aliyah Tisdale and freshman rightside hitter Lillie Jordan.

LATTA FOOTBALL SUFFERS FIRST LOSS

The Latta football team saw its hopes of a perfect season come to an end with a 33-0 loss to Carvers Bay on October 3. The Vikings fell to 5-1 while Carvers Bay improved to 7-0.

The Vikings, who are 1-1 in region play, had outscored the opposition 220-68 entering the game.

Senior running back Fischer Richardson is the offensive leader. He had 743 yards and 14 touchdowns on an even 100 carries entering the Carvers Bay contest. Sophomore Irangabiye Johnson had 433 yards and six scores on 41 carries.

Quarterback Luke Huggins had completed 17 of 24 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns. Jayden Alford had five catches for 117 yardss and a touchdown.
