Wilson Hall softball coming along despite very young team

Lady Barons have just one senior and one junior on the roster

Sumter – The Wilson Hall softball team saw its run of three consecutive state titles come to an end last season after losing six seniors to graduation from the previous year.

The Lady Barons only lost three seniors from last year’s squad, but the 2025 edition is much, much younger.

Wilson Hall only has one senior and one junior on this team.

“Our only expectation is to show a competitive spirit and see how much growth we can have this season,” said longtime Wilson Hall head coach Teresa Alexander. “We have competed well against some very strong teams (Laurence Manning Academy and Pee Dee Academy) and have had some good AAAA wins (Hammond and Ben Lippen).”

The Lady Barons split their first 12 games and opened 3-1 in SCISA Region 3-AAAA.

Of the returning players, only three are back at the same positions they played last year. They are senior centerfielder Abby Bradley, junior leftfielder Addie Griffin and catcher Caroline Moorman.

The infield has sophomore Jenna Greene at first base, seventh-grader Caroline Andrews at second base, freshman Mary Paisley Geddings at shortstop, eighth-grader Marsha Kate Skey and freshman Lily Grace Przybyla sharing time at third base as well as in the circle pitching. Eighth-grader Emmie Williamson is starting in right field.

The batting order has Bradley leading off with Andrews in the 2 hole and Geddings batting third. Griffin is in the cleanup spot followed by Skey batting fifth and Przybyla sixth. Moorman is batting seventh, Greene eighth and sophomore designated player Madelynn Davis batting ninth.

Geddings has the team’s top batting average, hitting just under .500. Bradley leads the team in stolen bases and Griffin is the top home runs hitter.

Alexander said she has been pleased with how the younger players are handling the bats at the varsity level.

“The younger girls are better hitters than I was expecting,” she said. “Usually hitting varsity pitching takes some adjusting, but they seem to already be comfortable with it.”

Przybyla provided some innings for the Lady Barons last season. Skey is a first-year varsity player.

Freshman Grace McArthur is on the roster. She plays first and in the outfield and serves as a pinch hitter.

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
