Lamar's Boyd feeling good about Silver Foxes' progress in his first season
4-year starting QB Zori Pierce selected to Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl
Lamar – Tyler Boyd admits that he feels a lot better about his Lamar High School football team after five games than he did after three.
That’s what a pair of victories over AA schools – 62-36 over Lake City and 47-0 over North Central – by the Class A Silver Foxes can do for you.
“The last two games we’ve played have been a lot better,” said Boyd, who is in his first year as the head coach at his alma mater. “We’ve really played better on the offensive side, a lot less blown assignments. Defensively we seemed to come together last week.”
LHS had allowed 134 points in the first four games before pitching the shutout against North Central, which was undefeated entering the game.
Lamar has been led defensively by sophomore defensive end Mont Williams. He led the team with five tackles for loss through the first five games, including three quarterback sacks. Junior middle linebacker DQ Green is the leading tackler with 17 and leads in interceptions with two. He also had a sack and had caused a fumble.
Senior 4-year starting quarterback Zori Pierce is the unequivocal leader of the offense. The Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl selection had 365 yards and 10 touchdowns on 60 carries. He had completed 44 of 73 passes for 817 yards and five TDs.
Boyd admits he was very happy to inherit Pierce in his senior season.
“It's been great,” Boyd said. “He is one who's been on every week. He carried us the first few weeks and that was great to have.”
The Silver Foxes were averaging 242 rushing yards a game. Senior Nygel Eaddy was close behind Pierce with 311 yards and three scores on 45 carries, and junior Jaquez Dargan ha 223 yards and four TDs on 39 carries.
Senior Jojo Morris is the leading receiver with 16 catches for 274 yards and three touchdowns. Green has 10 catches or 223 yars and one score, and senior Kamil McCoy had nine catches for 142 yards and a score.
LHS opened play in Region 2 with a home game against McBee on October. It plays at Great Falls and Lee Central before closing out the regular season at home against C.A. Johnson and Lewisville.
“Hopefully our best football IS ahead of us,” Boyd said. “Special teams, offense and defense, that (the North Central game) was the first time we put it altogether.
“I feel we are getting tougher, as we started out not very tough. We did not have a lot of varsity experience. Now we’ve got sophomores who are starting who are playing like juniors.”
