Marion's Jaeda Davis selected to SCBCA AA girls basketball All-State team

Swamp Foxes finish with 17-9 record, runner-up in Region 7

Marion Marion High School senior Jaeda Davis was

selected to the South Carolina Basketball Coaches

Association AA All-State girls basketball team.


Davis led the Swamp Foxes in scoring with an average of

18.7 points per game. She also led in assists at 2.4 and steals at

2.5 while grabbing 2.4 rebounds.


Davis was also selected to the All-Region 7-AA team along

with junior Maliyah Williams. She averaged 10.6 points, 4.6

rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.8 steals.


Marion had a very good season, going 17-9 overall and

finishing second in the region with a 9-3 mark. It finihsed behind

eventual Lower State runner-up Lake City with a 10-2 record.

The Swamp Foxes also advanced to the second round of the

state playoffs.


MHS defeated Woodland 47-38 in its first-round game.

Marion had the misfortune of facing eventual 2-time defending

AA state champion Andrew Jackson in the second roun. The

Volunteers, who dominated throughout the state playoffs, won

100-41.


Junior Sheteria Bethea led the Swamp Foxes in

rebounding at a 7.2 clip while averaging 4.9 points. Junior

Kristin Shaw was another key contributor, averaging 5.2

rebounds and 2.8 points. Senior Rakyah Barr averaged 3.8

points.


Others who saw valuable minutes were sophomore Janiyah

Hall, junior Ayoni Malloy, junior Shamya McKelvy,

sophomore Payton Sawyer and senior Jamiya Shannon.


The other seniors were Kaitlyn Swinton and Devyn

Graham.


MHS head coach Chris Sanders said he was pleased with

the chemistry and teamwork the Swamp Foxes displayed

throughout the year.


“Stay together no matter what,” Sanders said.


WHITE, GERALD BOYS BASKETBALL ALL-REGION PICKS


Junior Charles White Jr. and junior Jaden Gerald

were selected to the All-Region 7 boys basketball team.


White led the Swamp Foxes in scoring, assists and steals.

He averaged 12.8 points, 2.7 assists and 2.4 steals to go with 5.2

rebounds. Gerald scored at an 11.2 clip to go with 3.1 rebounds,

2.1 assists and 1.4 steals.


Marion finished the year with a 12-15 overall record

while going 6-6 in region play, good for fourth place. The

Swamp Foxes reached the state playoffs and suffered a tough

69-67 loss to Burke.


Senior Jameir Legette closed out his career with a big

game, scoring 21 points while just missing out on a double-

double with nine rebounds. Gerald finished with 20 points,

while White had 13 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Senior Irenaeus Gurley had six points and three steals, while

senior Tahj Lathon grabbed a team high 10 rebounds to go with

four points.


“It was a year of ups and downs, but in the end we gave

ourselves an opportunity to win every night,” said head coach

DJ Kelly. “Unforunately it didn’t fall our way, but it’s all part of

the journey.”


Legette led MHS in rebounding at 6.3 while averaging 10.8

points. Lathon averaged 4.5 points and 5.0 rebounds, senior

Isaiah Vereen averaged 2.1 points and 2.8 rebounds, and Gurley

averaged 4.0.


The other seniors were Tyrice Davis, LaCoree Timmons,

Juwan Buey, Cortrell Miller, Amari Green and Jahmere

Tart.

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
