Dillon—It has been since 2015 that Dillon last competed for a baseball state title, but after a 4-3 win over Waccamaw at home on April, 16 head coach Keith Coward was pleased to see all the hard work finally bear fruit with vast improvement over last season.
As the HSSR was going to press the Wildcats were preparing a road trip to Oceanside Collegiate in an elimination game with the Landsharks. Dillon had won their district in the AAA playoffs defeating Keenan (16-0), Swansea (4-30 and Swansea again (6-50 on May 11 to advance.
Dillon lost their first playoff game at home against Hanahan (11-1) before bouncing back with a 4-3 win over Waccamaw on May 16. Oceanside Collegiate won the lower state AAA title last year before losing to Southside Christian in the finals.
Coach Coward was asked what the keys to victory over Oceanside consisted of. “We have to throw strikes and not make any errors, and it can be a very competitive game if we do this,” he said.
Dillon will have ace senior righty Hank Grider available for the game at Oceanside on May 18. Grider, an Anderson College signee, is currently 8-1 with 109 K’s in 57 & ½ innings of work. He also has two saves and a sterling ERA of .977. At the plate he is batting ,362 with 19 RBI’s.
Grider was recently named the AAA Pitcher of the Year in SC by the SC Baseball Coaches Association. “Grider is our bulldog,” said Coach Coward. “He can pound the strike zone.”
Going into the game with the Landsharks, the top hitters for the Wildcats included: First baseman Jaden Williamson (.422 with 17 RBI’s) leads the hit index. sophomore SS/pitcher Bryson Davis (.353 with 19 RBI’s) along with sophomore CF JJ Campbell (.368 & 14 RBI’s). Junior catcher JC Bohachic was at .250 with 12 RBI’s.
Dillon starts speedy freshman Nibras Harrison in RF, 8th grader Chuck Green starts at third base, and sophomore DJ Greene holds down a spot in left field. Freshman RHP Aiden Lancaster is the team’s number two pitcher, and he plays at second or shortstop when he is not on the mound.
Lancaster pitched all 7 innings in the win over Waccamaw. “Over the past month and a half Aiden has really come on strong for us on the mound,” said Coach Coward. “In the playoffs you need all the arms you can get, so him being able to pitch a complete game against Waccamaw saved some of our pitching for sure.
“The Waccamaw win was probably our biggest win, in terms of it advancing us deeper in the playoffs, since we made the state championship run in 2015,” said Coach Coward.
To date, Lancaster has pitched 45 innings with 31 K’s and he has a 3.44 ERA. He is 5-2 on the season.
On a side night, Coach Coward wants to congratulate senior reserve outfielder Heyden Drawhorn who was recently awarded 2.3 million in academic scholarships. He will be attending USC in the fall, and he has signed a commitment letter to return to Dillon after college and become a teacher in the district.
“Heyden is a great kid, and he is our senior Salutatorian this year at Dillon High,” said Coach Coward. “He is a very deserving young man, and the entire baseball team is excited for him.”
Against Waccamaw, in the recent win, Dillon pushed across three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take early control of the game. Campbell started off the inning reaching base on an error and then Grider was hit by pitch to put runners on first and second. Williamson bats third and singles to right field to load the bases.
Two batters later, Bohachic reached a ground ball error scoring Campbell to make it 1-0 with Grider advancing to third and Williamson advancing to second. Grider came home on an RBI ground-out by Lancaster to make it 2-0. Willaimson advanced to third on the throw. A ball by the pitcher scored Williamson to make it 3-0.
With the score tied after Waccamaw batted in the top of the third inning, Dillon scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the third inning to win 4-3. Williamson had a lead-off single and he advanced to second on a sac bunt by Davis. Two batters later, Lancaster hit a line drive single to center field to score Willaims and secure the win.
“I give a lot of credit to our improvement this season to our pitching coach Austin Moody who has done a great job working with pitchers,” said Coach Coward. “We also have a group of kids who compete in the box. We have also been lucky to avoid serious injuries to any of our players this season and this has not always been the case in recent years.”
Reserve players for Dillon include junior courtesy runner Lee Causey, soph Jayden Cooper is a reserve OF Aerion Chavis is a reserve catcher, Keilan Chavis is a 7th grade IF, while Hayden Hiott is a freshman back-up catcher.
Coach Coward is assisted by Moody, Coley Bohachic, Pierce Watson, Jamie Coleman, and Nelson Green.
