Ridgeland – As they gain experience and grow their love for the game, the golf team at Thomas Heyward could be a state title contending team in the near future.
The program at the school is relatively new but interest seems to be gaining each year. Athletic director Logan Taylor heads up the program and is liking the progress he sees on a daily basis.
“They played really well and we finished first in every region match this season,” he reports. We also consistently placed in the top three or five in tournaments. We won the region championship so we earned our way back to the state tournament for the third straight year. Most of the team is young but we’re building for the future while still producing results this season.”
Leading the way at the top is junior Fisher Thomas, while eighth-grader Mason Reed is No. 2. Junior Luke Averkin plays three and eighth-grader Caden Jones and eighth-grader Cole Bowen close out the top five.
“In one match this spring Thomas shot a one-under 35 at Berkeley Hall, which was his personal best. He also was low medalist and won the event, the first time we’ve had someone go under par in the modern era of the program.”
Another big part of the future is Reed, who has already been a big part of the program as a third-year varsity player. He was playing as a sixth-grader and shot a persona; best 40 this spring. Taylor says he is one to watch over the next several years.
