Parick Henry should have “solid” football team
Patriots fall to Academic Magnet before rebounding with win over Clarendon Hall
Estill – The Patrick Henry Academy football team lost one of the best players in program history in Mikell Tucker Mathis. That, however, doesn’t deter head coach Joe Gray Peeples from being excited about this year’s edition of the Patriots.
“We’re going to be a pretty solid team this year,” said Peeples, who is in his fourth year.
PHA split the first two games of the season. It lost to Academic Magnet 28-7 in the season opener before knocking off Clarendon Hall 29-27.
After winning the Class A state title in 2023with an 11-2 record, Patrick Henry was just 4-7 a year ago. Two of those loses came by six points or less, meaning it could have flipped the script on the season.
Mathis was the quarterback an he rushed for 1,230 yards and 20 touchdowns and passed for 912 yards and 12 more scores. As a linebacker on defense, Mathis had 115 tackles and was selected as the Region 2-Class A Defensive Player of the Year.
Senior Rylin Brunson will move into the quarterback role this season and will start at linebacker. Brunson had 708 yards of total offense last season to go with 34 tackles.
Senior Jacob Corley will be back at both wide receiver and linebacker. Corley had 22 catches for 330 yards and had 70 tackles
“He is highly productive on both sides of the ball,” Peeples said.
Another senior , Daivon Glover, returns as well as a wide receiver and defensive back.
“He’s one of the best cover corners in our league,” Peeples said. “He’s also a good wide receiver that needs more touches this year.”
Senior Tray Adkins is back as a defensive end and wide receiver. “He’s a really good pass rusher with great instincts, Peeples said.
Junior Luke Sobey returns at linebacker after finishing last season with 90 tackles. He is the team’s leading returning tackler.
“He’s a hard-nosed player with the ability to get to the football,” Peeples said.
Sobey will line up at running back on offense.
Peeples is hoping senior Diego Santana will be able to play a bigger role at running back, wide receiver and cornerback after being limited by injuries last season.
Junior Jay Bishop (6-feet-3-inches, 285 pounds) and junior Dru Williams will be back as part of the offensive line.
“For both it was the first year to start on the line last year,” Peeples said. “”They should improve and be solid players this year.”
Others who will play roles for Patrick Henry are Mason Edward, Daniel Berg, Kai Sobey and Gaige Roberts.
