Cavalier boys 3-4 under first-year head coach Kemp DeWitt

Bishopville – The Lee Academy girls basketball team is still learning the nuances of its roster,

according to head coach Kim Langston.

“At this point in the season, we are just getting acclimated to each other and growing each time

out,” Langston said, “We are going through some growing pains as all teams do, but we have some really

good leadership.”

While there is still room for growth, the Cavaliers is off to a solid 4-2 overall start and is 1-0 in

SCISA Region 1-AA. They are doing that despite returning only two starters from a 10-10 team that lost

in the first round of the state playoffs.

The two returning starters are junior Mazie Tomlinson and sophomore Mallori Frye. The rest of

the starting lineup is made up of juniors Sara Bell and Zana Brazell and freshman Karagan Melton.

Melton is the leading scorer, averaging 13.0 points a game to go along with 2.0 rebounds.

Tomlinson is averaging a team 14.8 rebounds to go with 7.8 points, 3.5 assists, 3.5 steals and 1.0 blocked

shots.

Brazell is a big worker on the boards with a 9.2 average. Her scoring average is 3.0. Frye is

averaging 2.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists. Bell is averaging 6.8 rebounds and 2.0 points,

Freshman Jameson Collins comes off the bench and is the second leading scorer with a 9.7

average. She is averaging 8.0 rebounds.

The other two members of the team are junior Raylee Catoe and sophomore Peyton Thompson.

“Everyone on the roster plays,” Langston said. “Jameson Collins plays hard for us and contributes

well. Peyton Thompson is new and is helping more each time out.”

LEE BOYS START 3-4 UNDER DEWITT

While Langston has been in charge of the girls program for several years, Kemp DeWitt is in his

first season in charge of the LA boys. Lee won three of its first seven games, losing its first two region contsts.

“I am happy with the progress we have made as a team in the season so far,” DeWitt said. “I look

forward to seeing how we will continue this as we get into the real meat of the season. Expectations-wise,

I like where we are at this point in the season.

“The team and I were really beginning to gel well as we headed into Christmas break. For us to

make a run in the second half of the season we just need to continue to put in the work at practice and

keep coming together as a team.”

The Cavaliers return only one starter from last season, that being freshman point guard Brayden

Davis. The other starters are senior center Trace June, junior small forward Cain June, senior power

forward Carson Davis and senior shooting guard Noah Brazell.

Trace June is the leading scorer at 11.0. Brazell is averaging 7.5, Brayden Davis 6.0, Cain June

5.0 and Carson Davis 3.0.

Junior Paxton Greene is averaging 4.0 off the bench. Other members of the team are juniors

Luke Richardson, Myles Frye, Collins Drayton and sophomore Gavin Makela.

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
