Wilson Hall softball team having a strong season
Barons baseball team finishes 6-4 in region play
Sumter – The Wilson Hall softball team is 15-4 on the season and 3-0 in SCISA Region 3-AAAA after playing in the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach over spring break and winning its first two games comng back. One of those region victories came against 2-time defending state champion and archrival Laurence Manning Academy by an 11-5 count.
The Barons have played a strong schedule and head coach Teresa Alexander thinks that will benefit her young squad come time for the AAAA state tournament in the middle of May.
“We have played a very difficult schedule and faced in at least five games a future (NCAA) D(ivision)I pitcher, which I believe is a direct reflection of our batting averages being a little under what many of our girls generally have,” Alexander said. “I am really proud of how our team accepted this challenge and grew from these games, even the losses.”
Freshman Marsha Kate Skey has been a standout in the circle. She had 78 strikeouts and a 1.55 earned run average after Wilson Hall went 4-0 in the Ripken Experience.
Freshman rightfielder Anna Meldrim was the leading hitter with a .413 batting average. Sophomore third baseman Lilly Grace Przybyla was also over .400 at .405.
Junior catcher Caroline Moorman and Skey aren’t far behind with averages of .395 and .391, respectively. Senior leftfieler Addie Griffin was hitting .368, and freshman second baseman Tatiana Erichsen was at .341.
Alexander offered nothing but praise for Griffin, one of two seniors on the roster
“I’ve gotten excellent leadership, defense, and batting from returning senior Addie Griffin,” she said.
Sophomore shortstop Mary Paisley Geddings was at .277, freshman outfielder Emmie Williamson was at .273 and eighth-grader centerfielder Caroline Andrews was at .262.
Sharing time at first base at senior Marymae Lampron and junior Jenna Green. Junior Madelynn Davis also sees time in the outfield.
BASEBALL TEAM STARTS 7-6
The Wilson Hall baseball team had a 7-6 overall record prior to spring break and was 6-4 in region play. Head coach Adam Jarecki has no issues with the Barons’ performance.
“I’ve been pretty pleased so far because we are competing each game,” he said.
In region play, Wilson Hall swept Laurence Manning and Trinity Collegiate in the 2-game series but were swept by defending state champion Hilton Head Christian Academy and John Paul II. The Barons then swept Camden Military after the return from spring break.
‘
Benson Elmore and Owen Barkley have been the top pitchers, according to Jarecki. Barkley and Cameron Wilsey are the leading hitters.
“Henry Jones, Michael Hunter, Cooper Hill and Peyton Gilley have done well for us both at the plate and defensively,” Jarecki said.
