Kemp DeWitt takes over as athletic director

Bishopville – Although he didn’t say it in so many words, Justin Logan has his dream job as a football head coach.

Logan was recently named the new head coach for his alma mater, Lee Academy. He had been an assistant coach under David Rankin at Lee for several years and was an assistant under Will Furse last season. He got the opportunity to be the Cavaliers head coach when Furse left to become the athletic director and head coach at Williamsburg Academy.

“It means a lot to me to get this chance,” said Logan, who was the head coach at Clarendon Hall in 2022, posting a 6-5 record. “I appreciate the opportunity I had at Clarendon Hall, but to be back at home and to be a head coach is great.”

Logan inherits a team that went 3-7-1 and was beset by injuries. He will continue to call the offensive plays while Will Watson will be the defensive coordinator. Brandon Gay will coach the offensive line, the defensive line and the tight ends, while Rob Brazell will work in the weightroom and coach the wide receivers. Bryce Barrett, who quarterbacked Lee to a state championship just a few years ago, will work with the defensive backs and the quarterbacks.

Logan believes he and his staff have a good rapport. He was an assistant along with Brazell and Watson.

I don't think it changes very much,” Logan said of him being the head coach. “I’ve worked with these guys for quite some time, and they all lobbied for me to get the job. When you have a lot of alphas you may not see eye to eye, but there is a common respect and everyone knows ultimately the head coach makes the decision. But we agree more than we disagree.”

Since Furse was also the AD at Lee, that position is having to be filled and the new AD is Kemp DeWitt. He will return for his second season as the boys basketball head coach and will coach the boys golf team as well.

Lee will have one other new head coach and a new sport as well. Ivy Watts will be in charge of the volleyball team. The new sport will be girls golf and it will be coached by an old hand at Lee in Kim Langston. She will again by the girls basketball head coach as well after a tremendous season.

Speaking of tremendous seasons, Danny Price will be back for his second season as the baseball head coach after leading the Cavaliers to the SCISA  AA state title in his first season. Craig Nesbit will continue to be the softball coach, and Lindsay Brazell will coach cheerleading.
