Furse happy with his football staff at Lee Academy

Former LMA head coach set for first year with Cavaliers

Bishopville Will Furse may be the athletic director and the football head

coach at Lee Academy, but he is definitely the newcomer on his own coaching

staff.

Furse, who left similar positions at Laurence Manning Academy to replace

David Rankin at Lee, inherited four new coaches already at Lee. They are Justin

Logan, David Daniel, Will Watson and Rob Brazzel.

Logan was an assistant under Rankin for several years before leaving for one

year to become the head coach at Clarendon Hall in Summerton in 2022. He led

the Saints to a 6-5 record that season, leading them to the SCISA Class A state

playoffs.

Logan returned to Lee after the one season at Clarendon Hall. He will coach

the wide receivers and the defensive backs.

Daniel is in his third year at Lee and will be in charge of the offensive line

and defensive line. “David does an excellent job coaching the linemen,” Furse said.

Watson, who is a former quarterback at Lee, will coach the quarterbacks and

the defensive backs. Brazzel will coach the tight ends and outside linebackers and

handles the strength program. “Rob does an excellent job as our strength coach,”

Furse said.

Furse was 19-7 in his two seasons as head coach at Laurence Manning. He

guided the Swampcats to the SCISA AAAA state championship game both

seasons, losing to 7-time defending state champion Hammond each time.

Laurence Manning dropped a 28-21 decision this past season.

Furse inherits a program that enjoyed tremendous success under Rankin. The

Cavaliers have played for the Class A state title each of the past four seasons and

in six of the past nine years. Lee won championships in 2015 and 2022 and posted

an 89-26 record over the past nine seasons.

Lee just missed on winning two consecutive state titles. The Cavaliers lost to

Patrick Henry Academy 28-21 in last year’s title contest.

As the athletic director, Furse is still in the process of putting together his

varsity head coaching staff. He said all of the positions are still in flux even though

he is close on several of them

Even with the South Carolina Independent School Association’s

reclassification, Lee Academy will remain in Class A for football. The Cavaliers

will compete at the AA level in all of the other sports as a member of Region 1.

The other schools in the region are Carolina Academy, Conway Christian, The

King’s Academy and Class A flex schools Marlboro Academy and LOL Steam

Academy,
