Summerville – Shutouts were the theme of the 2025 Dorchester County Showdown football jamboree.

Teams representing Ashley Ridge, Fort Dorchester, Summerville and Woodland came to John McKissick Field Aug. 15 to participate in their final preseason competition before opening their regular season the following week. The Swamp Foxes shutout the Wolverines during a two-quarter scrimmage and the Green Wave shutout the Patriots during a scrimmage cut short due to safety concerns.

Summerville had a 21-0 lead in the night cap with just more than four minutes remaining in the final quarter, but Fort Dorchester had a fourth-and-goal from the Green Wave 5-yard line. Prior to the snap school and security officials ended play due to an off-field ruckus that broke out in between the end of the home stands and the iconic tree beside the Dorchester School District Two home office.

On the field, Summerville, the Defending 5A, Division 1 Lower State Champion, moved the ball both on the ground and through the air while limiting Fort Dorchester’s offensive production.

“We have the pieces; we just have to get them together,” said Summerville coach Ian Rafferty. “Our defense started very well with that Pick 6 and the Fort didn’t get a first down for a while. Our offense, including our receivers, blocked well and we caught some big balls so it was pretty balanced. I can’t stand much mediocrity and I think we got to that in the second quarter, but I don’t think anybody really played bad.”

Running back Jayvyn Williams scored on runs of 62 yards and 64 yards and Cam Grayson had some nice runs. Summerville’s other touchdown came when defensive back Jordan Ravenell intercepted a pass on Fort Dorchester’s first possession and returned it approximately 20 yards into the end zone. With Nate Beaver’s second of eventually three successful extra-point kicks, the Green Wave led 14-0.

Fort Dorchester defensive lineman Kasamania Milo recovered a fumble on Summerville’s next possession, but the Patriots didn’t capitalize. Later in the scrimmage, defensive back Jeff Jefferson picked off a Summerville pass and linebacker Savon Garrett made a few big tackles including a sack. However, the Patriots didn’t turn those plays into scores either.

“We have to get a lot tougher,” said Fort Dorchester coach Shaun Lorenzano. “We are young and under the lights at McKissick Field is a tough place to play so a lot of these kids have never been in that situation. I think we are going to compete, but we have to make sure we learn the lessons that can be learned. Our defense played well, but gave up some big plays. Offensively there were some good things, but we have a quarterback battle and one of our QBs didn’t get to play much.”

Fort Dorchester’s main other highlights came on its final possession. Running back Mykell Warthen had runs of 15 yards and 25 yards while running back Kyrome Durant broke free for a 37-yard run to move the ball inside the 10. However, after three attempts, the Patriots sat on the 5 and play was suspended.

Ashely Ridge

The other varsity scrimmage was between Ashley Ridge and Woodland. The Swamp Foxes were explosive on offense and stingy on defense during their 29-0 win over the Wolverines.

Ashley Ridge quarterback Trevor Kalisz connected with running back Ryan Campbell on a 50-yard TD pass.

Julian Whitfield picked off a Woodland pass and returned it 25 yards for a first-and-goal that set up Camren Garner’s 2-yard TD run for a 13-0 Swamp Foxes’ lead.

In the second quarter, Campbell scored on a 34-yard TD run and Wyatt Carter added his second of three eventual successful extra-point kicks for a 20-0 Ashley Ridge lead.

The Swamp Foxes’ defense backed the Wolverines up on their next possession and a bad snap led to three AR defenders pouncing on a ball carrier in the end zone for a safety.

The final score of the scrimmage came on a 27-yard TD run by Garner.

“Our No. 1’s did a good job tonight,” said Ashley Ridge interim coach Ashley Haskins. “We have a big game next week so we will have to play a lot cleaner then. It’s going to be important for us to develop some depth so when we do have to put some substitutes in we can be just as efficient or at least as close as we can be with the second group.”

Woodland coach Eddie Ford said the scrimmage was a good test for his 3A team.

“Ashley Ridge is a really good 5A team,” he said. “They are explosive at every position so we just wanted to get in there and make it tough for them. There were spots on defense where we played well tonight and some spots on offense, but we have to get it all going at the same time. We did some things to hurt ourselves, but they made some good plays too so it’s kind of hard to gauge how we did. We will have to watch the film to get a better feel and of course then make corrections.”

By Rob Gantt Special to the HSSR HANAHAN - Two Berkeley County football programs locked horns in a controlled scrimmage Thursday, Aug. 6, and both team's leaders came away somewhat pleased with what they saw. Hanahan coach Milan Turner and Stratford coach Dennie McDaniel were less concerned with the scoreboard and more focused on the small things as the Hawks and Knights battled on the turf at Hanahan's Hawk's Nest facility by Bowen's Corner Elementary. "I'm very pleased with our effort," McDaniel said. "Our attitude has to get a bit better. We had some plays where we broke down in some stuff. We've just got to get out of our feelings and play the next play. That's a young team for you. We've got some maturing to do. We'll do that in the early part of the season. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good performance for a young team." The Class 5A Knights are replacing quite a few starters off a squad that won 10 games and advanced to the third round of the playoffs in 2025. The Knights figure to be able to build around their front seven on defense. Offensively they were hit hard by graduation, though. In terms of returning impact players, the Class 3A Hawks are in a better situation on offense. They bring back a three-year starter at quarterback in big junior lefty Tripp Gallus (6-5, 231). A few other playmakers are back, too, including receivers Grayson Mathes and Quamel Grant . Turner's bunch finished 6-6 in 2025. "For me, I want to see a physicality and a toughness from our kids," Turner said about the first scrimmage. "I told them before we started. I said be violent between the whistles. We know they're going to make some mistakes and obviously we want to try to minimize those. We want to see things like running to the football, all the things that don't take talent. Those are the things I have to see. If I don't see those, we've got a lot of work to do. I feel like we saw that." During Hanahan's opening set of offensive plays, Gallus hooked up with Mathes for an 81-yard touchdown pass on a tunnel screen and Grant over the middle for an 80-yard scoring strike. Stratford defensive lineman Kermit Davis got the Knights on the board with a sack and fumble return for a tally. When the situational scrimmage moved to red zone work, Knights running back Malachi Breland reached paydirt twice, while quarterbacks Dathan Haywood and Caleb Lott tossed touchdowns to Denzel Lazo and Jayden Lee. The Hawks recorded three scores from the red zone, with running back Xavier Sabback scoring on the ground and Gallus distributing his third and fourth touchdown tosses to Jesiah Smith and Evan Knight. During goal-line possessions, which capped the scrimmage, Breland crossed the goal line for the third time and Haywood hooked up with Tyrese Simmons for a score. Sabback capped the scoring for the Hawks with a touchdown run out of the wildcat formation. Earlier, Stratford defensive back Jayden Judge and Hanahan safety Landon Hubler snagged interceptions. Mathes snuffed out Stratford's first drive with a pick in the end zone. The Hawks host Cane Bay Friday, Aug. 14, in a scrimmage. "Now, it's about shrinking the amount of mistakes," Turner said. "We've got tape of this. We want to identify those mistakes: what were mental errors, what were physical errors and what did us as coaches do. Maybe it was us that didn't put our kids in position to be successful." Stratford suits up in the Moncks Corner Lions Club jamboree Aug. 14 at Berkeley High School. "It's going to be a quick opportunity for us," McDaniel said. "We've only got two quarters but we want to make it as game-like as possible. I want to see us clean up the silly penalties and get better at just playing the next play."
