By Billy G. Baker
Publisher
Moncks Corner—There were only five teams in Class AAA last year that finished the ’24 season with double digit wins and each of them have a chance to compete for a state championship this season.
The HSSR gives the pre-season number one nod to tradition rich Dillon (10-3 last season) and the Wildcats are fielding their best over-all football team since the last time they won a state title back in 2017. The Wildcats have great skilled players and a set of linebackers who could play on any team in the state. Our next four teams are number two Mountain View Prep, third ranked Oceanside Collegiate, followed by Loris and BHP to round out the top five. Mountain View Prep lost star RB Jaylen McGill who reclassified back to the 2025 class and he took advantage of a rich NIL deal, and he is now at North Carolina.
Woodruff will begin the season at number six with Newberry, Powdersville, Christ Church and Orangeburg-Wilkinson rounding out the AAA top 10 in that order.
Region 1 AAA Predicted Order Of Finish:
1. BHP
2. Crescent
3. Walhalla
4. Pendleton
5. West Oak
BHP:
It will be very difficult for the Bears (13-2 last season) to replace all-world RB Maurice Henderson, who is now at Clemson. It might be a while before someone of his running ability graces the campus of BHP again. However, the cupboard is not bare. Five all-region performers return on offense alone. Three -year all-region QB starter Noah Thomas (5-11,165) is back along with senior all-region RB MJ Earle (5-9,165) All-region WR Tajeh Watson-Martin (5-10,170) is also back. The top OL is all region stand-out Kaylin Dixon (5-11, 250) who will become a four-year starter this season. The LG is an all-region performer Keagann Mosher (6-0,260) who will also be starting for his 4th consecutive year. TE Brody Riddle (5-11,180) is back as a second- year starter.
On defense the Bears are not bare either. The defensive front is as imposing as ever led by four- year starter, all-region Kylan Dixon (6-0, 290) along with DL and three-year starters Ty Rainey, and all region DE. Kamarion Glenn is a three- starter who earned all-region also. All-region LB Jakyri Anderson (6-1,185) is back as a three-year starter. Watson will flip to DB and DB KJ Miles will start for the second year.
The two top sophomores on the team are TE/QB Nick Sargent and DE Charlie Haynie.
BHP head coach Russell Blackston comes into the season with a 134-44 record.
BHP will begin the 2025 season at Broome.
CRESCENT:
Coach Sheldon Evans (34-39) is in his eighth season and coming off a successful ‘24 season with a record of 7-5, with a 3-1 second place in the region behind BHP. Head Walhalla coach Blake Dyar begins his first season with a team that posted a 6-6 record in ’24 with a playoff appearance. Key returners include Dylan Cobb (QB/PK), Essien Nathan (RB/DB), Darian Simpkins (WR/DB), and Romeo Mendez (LB).

The Patriots have a core group of senior leaders that could give the team double wins this season and a deep play-off run. It all starts with senior QB Keagan Reid and he is honored to have senior receivers Desmond Hunter and Bennett Brooks back as top targets.
Hunter flips to DB where he joins DB Tavious Williams on the back end. Among junior leaders, WR/DB Xavier Huggins, WR/DB Nasir Waldrop, DL Jayden McGrier, and LB Jayden Wertz all return with experience.

2. Woodruff
3. Chapman
4. Union County
5. Broome
MOUNTAIN VIEW PREP:
Coach Grey Ramsey can’t complain too much about his inaugural season going 12-1 with a 4-0 run in the playoffs before losing in the Upper State title game to BHP.
With 9 of 11 starters back on defense MVP should have a deep playoff run once again. There was a three-way battle for the starting QB position with senior leaders Brody Judd, A.J. McAllister, and junior Dorman transfer Makorean Anderson, all competing for the coveted spot. Leading WR K.D. Hainsworth is back along with SS Jacoby Smith who will also see time at WR. Coach Ramsey tells reporters that MVP has the two best defensive ends in SC in Des David Lewis and CJ Love. Highly regarded Byrnes transfer MJ Jeter will add depth to the CB position. Jet Hodge (5-10,195) returns at MLB.
The big surprise for MVP was standout RB Jayln McGill graduating early during the offseason to start college at UNC where he got a huge NIL deal. Soph RB Dylan McKey (5-5,165) is expected to step up and do a good job for MVP in McGill’s place.
MVP will begin the season against Atlantic Collegiate on August 22.
WOODRUFF:
With a strong defense returning from a 9-2 team in ’24, plus several skill players to make their offense productive, Woodruff head coach Brett Sloan (48-30) begins his 8th year as a head coach, focused on returning the Wolverines back to the historic success of the Willie Varner days. Returning seniors like TE Kam Taylor (6-6,230), WR Kori Moates (5-11,175), LB Shaun Graybill (6-1,215), and DL Travon Lee are key playmakers in all team goals.

UNION COUNTY:
Second year head coach Quinnon Isom says he likes the character, depth, and grit of the 2025 Union County football team. He also says that with “consistency” his club can make great improvement over their 2-8 record in ’24. This year’s team will be built around four key returning seniors. They are DL Jaylon Davis who earned all-state honors last season, along with the return of all-region players RB Dreshawn Mills, WR Akeem Shaw, and DL Jayden Chick.
In the Spring Davis, Shaw, Chick, and QB Qa Brannon received the most recruiting interest. Juniors being counted on are Lexi Gentry, WR Akeem Sims, DL Jemarius Smith. Sophomores to watch include LB Noah Tucker, and DB King Henderson. The top player up from jayvee is Lodon Veal.
Union County will host Newberry on August, 22 to start the season.
BROOME:
Lynn Fleming (125-115) is the dean of coaches in Region 3-AAA and nothing would please the veteran coach more than improvement over his team’s 3-8 record in ‘24. Help towards that goal will get support from top seniors LB Asher Littlejohn, RB Tyqwoy Booker, and top junior WR Braydon Simpson.
Senior QB Jameson Dearybury, junior T/G Kelvin Crook (5-10,275), OL Levi Bishop (6-3, 210) and junior OL Carson Taylor all need to step up in strong support roles this season.

The team’s hopes of repeating as region champions are led by the play of South Carolina tight end commitment Jamel Howze (6-3, 215) who blocks and catches passes very well. LT Eli Sanders is drawing interest from Coastal Carolina and RB Jamere Crooks has five D-1 offers.
Senior Kenton Caldwell (6-1,155) returns at QB along with RB BJ Jones. Senior Brady Chapman (6-0,260) is back at center. CB Tank Davis is the top junior on the team. Julian Senn is also back to lead the linebacking group. Coach Jeter says the OL/DL are the strengths of the team.
Newberry will start the season with a game at Union County.
SWANSEA:
In Willie Fox’s first year as head coach at Swansea the team finished 7-4 and they had a 2-2 region record that was a vast improvement over an 0-10 record in 2023.
Swansea hopes to build further success around the return of all-region senior LB William Geddis (6-0,215). LB Jerel Wine (6-3,190) also returns along with Patrick Lowery. DL newcomer Jamarieye Jones (6-1,220) will get early playing time. Soph Kevin Slighter (5-10,250) is also solid performer at DT. Matthew Pabegins the 2025 season with a home game against Mid-Carolina.
Soph QB Kendall Wright will be a first- year starter. Charles Moody (6-2, 315) is the captain of the OL that also includes RG Davis Livingston (6-0,225) and center Ethan Jeffcoat ((6-1, 230).
Swansea begins the season with a home game against Mid-Carolina.
FOX CREEK:
With four starters back in the OL Fox Creek head coach Lemuel Lackey (106-69) is hoping to improve on last year’s 4-6 record. More important is to improve on the 0-4 region record of ’24.
The transfer in of RB Bryson Cranford Fox Creek will have a quality athlete to run behind a stellar OL. RG Alec Beck is the leader of the OL along with LG John Truesdell, RT Braden Vasquez, and LT Tommie Tucker, Jr., and center Trenton Belk. The team’s top soph is DB Mehki Quiller and the top player up from jayvee is LB Gabriel Reyes. In the pre-season there was a QB battle between Nate Owens and Brandon Wallace.

KEENAN:
Raider head coach Jarrett Neely saw his team make great strides in ’24 with an 8-5 record. The team’s top senior prospects are TE/DL Anthony King (6-6,215) and LT Quashawn Hampton. Other top seniors back include: DL Tyrik Davenport-Smith (6-2,185) , and DB Xzavier Collins (6-0,165).
RB Hunter O’Neal and DB Jaemon Benson head up the junior group. A key player up from the jayvee will be center Jmauri Smith.
Keenan will begin the season at Dreher.
SILVER BLUFF:
In Matt Haye’s his first season as the head coach of the Bulldogs the team went 2-9 so the main goal coming into the ’25 season is to beef up the defensive front. With only Keyaideen Williams back in the DL that might be a challenge. The team’s top senior leaders are TE/H-back Zean Dicks and center Gage Kirkbride.
Top juniors are RB Dre Brown, DL Dezmere Jackson, and RB Dorian Jones. A top sophomore is DB Lance Hieke. The top player up from the jayvee is DL Trevone Parker.

Region 5-AAA Predicted Order Of Finish:
1. Dillon
2. Loris
3. Marlboro County
4. Aynor
5. Waccamaw
6. Georgetown
DILLON:
It is the goal of any team, at any level of football, to have a quality QB who has both talent and leadership skills, and such a prospect has put both his feet firmly on the ground at Dillon High.
Freshman quarterback Khayel Samfong-Talia (6-2, 208) completed three TD passes in the recent Dillon County Jamboree, giving testament that his status as a Next Level Under Armour All-American is justified and verified. “Khayel” arrives just in time to help make big play senior WR, and UNC commitment Zay Robertson a stats leader this season in pass receptions in SC. The duo hooked up for two TD receptions against Darlington in the jamboree the Wildcats won 21-14.
Dillon Head coach Kelvin Roller: “Zay is so explosive at the wide receiver position and North Carolina is getting an outstanding player in him,” said Coach Roller. “He was the difference in this game for us tonight. He was the best player out there on the field for sure.
“I thought our excellent linebacker Daniel Capehart also did a good job running the ball tonight, and he gives us more size in the back field, and he is a very hard physical runner,” said Coach Roller. “He can do both and he’s in great shape also.”
Coach Roller is also keen on his freshman quarterback. “He was a little nervous at first under the Big lights, on the varsity for his first time, but he recovered and played very well and we have seen what he can do and he is going to be a great player for us,” said Coach Roller. Samfong-Talia is already getting recruiting interest from Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Clemson and BYU among others.
Other than Robertson, Dillon’s top seniors include LB/RB Daniel Capehart (6-1,195), LB Keryien Brown (5-11, 190), OL/DL Kiele Pompey (6-0,270), RB/DB Domanick Felton (5-9,170) and WR/DB Geo Warren (6-0,175).
The team’s top three juniors include DB/WR Kelvion Manning (6-3, 190), TE/LB Keshawn Ray (6-0,200) and DB Rontae McClam. Another top freshman is WR Nibras Harrison.
“We have a lot of good players but I do not want to get carried away talking about them until we get the season underway and see what they do once the season starts,” said Coach Roller.
(Please see feature story on Dillon elsewhere in this issue).
Dillon will begin the season with a road trip to Scotland County on August, 22.
LORIS:
Last season the shot heard around the world was Loris beating Dillon, 30-27 at home, and that win led Loris to win the region title. Loris had their great season end with a 42-7 loss to eventual state champion Oceanside Collegiate in the third round of the play-offs. Coach Greg Mance is coming off a successful ‘24 season that saw the Lions finish 11-2.
Loris returns 14 starters this season. The player that makes things happen is QB “Moon” Gerald who passed for 1,557 yards and 19 TD’s. Gerald is a dual threat who also rushed for 400 yards.
Other key returners include, talented juniors WR/CB Jacobiean Lewis (6-2, 175), DE Damarea Thurmond (6-3, 300), HB/OLB/DE Landon Connor (6-0, 225). Loris likely has the most depth at RB as any team in the state. Duece Stephens had 900 yards & 16 TD’s a year ago Khalid Sherman and Roderick Purcha each had over 550 yards also and the trio is back this season.
Logan Coleman (6-3,280) is a leader in the OL along with all-stater Damarea Thurmond (6-3, 300).Jamarius Wilson (6-3, 260) is a force in either line also.
Loris begins the season at Green Sea Floyds on August 22.
MARLBORO COUNTY:
Coach Cory Johnson is aiming for the playoffs to make up ground for the 2024 season that ended due to a forfeiture season, over a player eligibility issue. The Bulldogs have talent aplenty with 9 returning seniors, and 18 juniors providing the experience to have a shot at winning a region title. Johnson was highly successful coach previously at Clinton, NC where he would a state title.
Some of the players who will be key in the team’s success this season include: Soph QB Tre Blakeney, junior DE prospect Kaiden Walton (6-2,215), and junior nose guard Patrick Williams (6-3, 280). (Please see story on Marlboro County football elsewhere in this issue.)
Marlboro County will start the season against Lake Marion on August 22.
AYNOR:
When three basketball players join the Aynor football team as wide receivers you have to figure head coach Jason Allen is tweaking the single wing “smash face” mantra and converting more to a flex bone. Ian Kwowlin, Lucas Kemp, and Jamarion Mitchell might not have made the basketball coach at Aynor happy but football fans will be cheering them on for sure.
Alex Lewis, who has a strong passing arm, will take over the QB duties while former QB Luke McCracken will move to RB.
Aynor was 6-5 last season and in a region that has opponents like Dillon, Loris and Marlboro County sometimes making your offense harder to defend is a good idea. Connor Rabon is back as a quality OL/DL and Blaise Hucks will be both an “A” back on offense and a FS on defense.
Aynor begins the season on August, 22 against Aiken.
WACCAMAW:
Coach Amondre Johnson took his team to a 6-5 season with a 3-2 run in the play offs for 2024. Senior leadership will come from RB Trenten Parker, WR Savion McNeil, LT Tevies Burraghs, DL D’Ante Washington, LG Nico O’Hara, and DL Antonio Deas. The two junior leaders are DB Jayden Hooks and DB Nashaun Kinder. Mike Johnson III will be a starting soph QB and other sophomores include DL Damajah Smith, DB Kendal Boyd, and WR Trent Singleton.
Georgetown will begin the season hosting Kingstree on August, 22.
Region 6-AAA Predicted Order Of Finish
1. Oceanside Collegiate
2. Orangeburg-Wilkinson
3. Hanahan
4. Battery Creek
5. North Charleston
OCEANSIDE COLLEGIATE:
Oceanside rallied behind interim head coach John Patterson in ’24, compiling and 11-3 record and winning the AAA state title, after head coach Chad Wilkes resigned three days after an opening season loss to Irmo. Patterson did not seek the head job and after the season defensive coordinator Brent LaPrad was elevated to the head coach.
The Landsharks could be just as strong in ’25. Returning for his third varsity season is junior QB Aiden Manavian, who threw for over 3,400 yards last season. Manavian has been the quarterback on consecutive state title teams.
OCA returns explosive WR Terance Johnson, who had 700 receiving yards. Johnson will also see time at RB. James O’Connor, also returns at RB and he gained 600 yards a year ago.
Transfers have help fill the void at WR with Anthony Williams (Fort Dorchester), Ethan Ranew (West Ashley) and Cooper Webb (Philip Simmons) joining the program.
Senior Wofford pledge Mike Jones, anchors the OL as a fourth-year starter. Lamarion Thompson brings experience as a transfer from Fort Dorchester.
Jones, senior Sawyer Arnold, an App State pledge, and junior Jaxson Bean will lead the DL Michael Strickler is the lone returning DB starter. Jackson Summey gives the Landsharks a major threat in the kicking game.
The Landsharks will begin the season on August, 22 against Irmo.
ORANGEBURG WILKINSON:
Chris Carter’s O-W Bruins went 8-4 and finished second in the region. And this season could be even better.
One of the top returners is athlete Jordan Avinger (6-2,230) who teams up with senior Derrick Thomas to lead the ground game. Avinger has firm offers from Arkansas, ECU, and South Florida. Hammond transfer Daylin Haltiwanger (6-4,220) is a big target for returning QB Brendan Peoples, a sophomore. Desi Miller is the top returning WR but Hammond transfer Daylin Haltiwanger will be a key addition on both sides of the ball. The line will likely start just one senior, guard Deshawn Vick (6-1,305).
On defense, DL Jayden Lambright and Terry Johnson are returners up front. Avinger returns at linebacker, joined by returner Chris Glover and Monte Sistrunk. Jayden Dash and Jordan Logan start in the secondary.
O-W will begin the 2025 season on August, 22 against the Anderson Cavaliers.
HANAHAN:
Hanahan head coach Milan Turner begins his third season with the Hawks who have won 13 games in Turner’s first two seasons. Coach Turner is hoping year three will be the best season yet. Sophomore quarterback Tripp Gallus was the starter for the last half of ‘24 and he has a lot of natural talent. Gallus is also a top baseball prospect. The Hawks lost their leading receiver but Bo Brabham and Quamell Grant are ready for their strep-up roles.
Sophomore Elijah Mitchell will be a leader in the offensive front. Kamani Raymond is also an experienced OL. Brandyn Maduro and Josh Amara will be a leader at linebacker and tight end.
Hanahan will start the 2025 season against Philip Simmons on August, 29.
NORTH CHARLESTON:
Adrain Grady took over the North Charleston program late in the summer of 2024 and he led the Cougars to a respectable 4-6 season under the circumstances.
Some key players returning this season include: Senior D’Andra Thompson who will start at at quarterback along with senior Lorenzo Kitchings a returning WR starter who will flip to the secondary.
Anthony Simmons is a key returner in the OL/DL. Two other key defenders will be LB Jay Fleming and DB Tion Blakeney
Noth Charleston will begin the season against .
BATTERY CREEK:
Ed Susi’s Dolphins won three wins in ’24, an improvement from 0-10 in Susi’s first season. Those wins gave the program 32 wins since 2012, the last winning season.
One year later the Dolphins should be more competitive in ‘25. Linebacker Cody Smith, a senior, will lead the D,L along with end Michael Cohen and lineman James Snead.
Senior Chase Olsen returns as the starting QB. Ty Simmons should be a key WR.r.
Battery Creek will start the 2025 season against Hilton Head Christian.
