Shannon Davis selected to SCBCA AAA All-State team

Sumter – None of the past four seasons culminated in a state championship for the Crestwood

High School boys basketball team. However, that’s about the only thing this senior group didn’t

accomplish.

“I’m very proud to be talking about Crestwood’s 2025 boys basketball class,” said Knights head

coach Aric Samuel, who led Crestwood to the 2023 AAA state championship game. “We won over a

hundred games with a record of 101-13. That’s the best run in Crestwood history.”

Crestwood finished the season with a 24-4 overall record while going undefeated in 12 Region 5-

AAAA contests. The Knights reached the quarterfinals of the state playoffs. After beating South Aiken

102-69 in the first round, Crestwood beat Brookland-Cayce 82-75 in the second round. Their season

came to an end though with a 63-55 loss to region foe Wilson. Crestwood defeated the Tigers in the two

regular-season matchups.

The Knights were led by the senior trio of Shannon Davis, Teon Tindal and Xzavier Johnson.

All three were selected to the All-Region 5 first team with Davis being tabbed as the Region Offensive

Player of the Year. Davis was also named to the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association AAA

All-State team.

The 6-foot-8-inch Tindal and Davis were picked as part of the Top 5 Seniors in AAAA by

SCBCA in the preseason.

Davis was leading Crestwood n scoring late in the season with an average of 18.2 points per

game. He was also leading in assists at 3.5 and steals at 2.8 to go along with 4.9 rebounds.

Tindal was just missing out on averaging a double-double. He was scoring at an 11.2 clip and

pulling down a team high 9.8 rebounds. He also was leading in blocked shots at 1.6.

Johnson was averaging 13.1 points and 2.5 steals.

The other starters were seniors as well in Jaheim Jones and Riley Durant, both of whom are 6-

4. Durant was averaging 6.6 points and 4.7 rebounds, while Jones was averaging 4.9 points and 6.8

rebounds.

The other seniors were Tyon Bennett, Jamall Alston, Jaydis Williams, Cedaryan Nickens,

Jeremie Richardson and Aaron Taylor.

SANIYAH WILLIAMS GIRLS BASKETBALL ALL-REGION PICK

Senior Saniyah Williams was Crestwood’s lone representative on the All-Region 5 girls

basketball team.

Williams led the Lady Knights in scoring with a 17.4 average while pulling down 3.3 rebounds

and coming up with 2.0 steals.

Fellow senior London Vaughn averaged 12.points and team highs in assists and steals at 3.8 and

2.7, respectively. She also averaged 4.1 rebounds.

Crestwood finished its first season under head coach Shaquanda Miller-McCray with an 8-16

overall record. The Lady Knights went 4-8 in region play, which was good for fifth place.

That was good enough to get Crestwood into the state playoffs. It lost to Gray Collegiate

Academy 71-37 in the first round.

Junior Javiah Martin was third in scoring at 9.3

Other seniors were Mikayla Edmonds, Treasure McDpnald, Jonee McClain, Jer’Niya Alston

and Faith Madison.

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
