Central High’s Braelyn Oliver Named The NETC Female Student Athlete of the Month

Pageland—Braelyn Oliver is a senior at Central of Pageland High School where she is an outstanding member of the golf team and she has already been named captain of the team for this upcoming season .

Oliver is currently ranked number one academically in the senior class at Central High School where she has earned an impressive 5.331 GPA. If she maintains this academic status, she will be a proud Valedictorian when her senior class graduates in early June.

For all her athletic and academic accomplishments, Oliver has been chosen the January  “NETC Female Student Athlete of the Month.”

This honor is bestowed through a partnership between the Northeastern Technical College and “The High School Sports Report” with the publication communicating with athletic directors at high schools in the counties of Dillon, Marlboro, and Chesterfield, where NETC serves the needs of high school students seeking to earn dual credits in various subjects that can be transferred to colleges after a student’s high school graduation.

Oliver’s GPA, and her stellar academic status, has been greatly improved by her participation in 14 online courses offered through the “NETC” based in Cheraw, S.C. Entering the second semester of her senior year, Oliver has taken Sociology 101, Spanish 101, History 101, Music 105, Phycology 201, Art 101, Theater 101, CRJ 101, English 101, Psychology 201, Economics 101, Marketing 101, SPC 205 and Math 120.

Oliver has been involved in the Central High golf program for the past four years. She will participate on the boy’s team this season and she is excited about the possibility of playing number one. Oliver has a 38 stroke 9- hole average. Her best 18-hole round in year-round competition has been a 73.

As a junior, Oliver placed fourth at the state golf championships with rounds of 74 and 78 respectively. She was medalist for her team at the region meet.

“This being my last season in high school, I am excited about being the team captain and my goal is to help the team improve our standing in the state tournament this May,” said Oliver. “I am also excited about playing number one also.”

Oliver, a Wofford Scholar, will be majoring in Criminal Justice at the next level. She hopes to become a lawyer. Her goal is to attend either the Wofford Honors College. or the honors college at the University of South Carolina.

“My favorite online courses were Criminal Justice 101, Marketing 101, and Psychology 101,” said Oliver. “I would like to encourage any high school student in the “NETC” coverage area to give online course a try. You will never know what a great opportunity the dual credit online courses are if you do not at least give it try.

“I improved my time management skills taking online courses and it made me think about just how important my academic future is to me and my goals,” said Oliver. “I am proud of the fact that as a result of taking 14 online courses at the “NETC” I should start college as a junior.”

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
