Florence – Friday night in Florence the defending Division II 5A state champion Berkeley Stags were looking for the chance to defend their title but first they had to get by rival Goose Creek, a team that had beaten them twice during the regular season.
As the teams headed to halftime things did not look good for the Stags as they trailed the Gators by 12 points 31-19. They came out of the locker room with a renewed purpose and determination outscoring the Gators 15-2 in the third quarter on their way to 52-48 win earning the right to defend their State Championship.
Asked what she told her team at the half Head Coach Crystal Peace said, “I asked the girls if they wanted to win?”
Coach continued, “I said is anything that happened, that I didn’t tell you would happen in the game. They said no. I told them then it is up to you. Do you want to win or go home? They didn’t want to go home.”
The win improved the Stag’s record to 22-5 and avenged their two regular-season losses to the Gators.
“For us I think the two losses were more mental than physical. We had a turnover here, didn’t box out and didn’t do the little things you need to win those type of games. I am extremely proud of these girls and we are going back to state,” said coach Peace.
Goose Creek ended their season at 25-3 but it is bittersweet. The region 7 5A champions were looking to get back to the state championship game for the 7th time. They lose three seniors so look for this team to be one of the top teams in the state next season.
The game started like a heavyweight boxing match in the first quarter as each team was feeling out the other to see where to attack and the quarter ended with the Gators up 11-10. Jaliaya Jacobs and Aiyanna Moses scored all the points for the Gators while the Stags were led by Alaina Carter with four points.
The second quarter saw the Gators offense come to life as they started the quarter on a 7-0 run with six players putting the ball through the hoop led by Celeste Griffin’s 8 points as they outscored the Stags 20-9 to take a 31-19 lead into the half.
Led by senior Demi Gray, who scored 8 points in the quarter, the Stags scored the first 11 points of the quarter to cut the lead to 31-30 with two minute remaining in the quarter.
The Gators went stone cold in the quarter missing one three-pointer after another before Synclaire Frasier finally drove the ball to the basket where she was fouled in the act of shooting. She temporarily stopped the run by hitting both of her free throws.
Berkeley would score the next four points and take their first lead of the game at 34-33 with 40 seconds left. That is also where the third quarter ended.
The fourth quarter went back and forth as the Gators finally found the bottom of the hoop as Madeline Dates and Moses each scored seven points.
Carter would give the Stags the leads for good at 47-46 when she hit one of two free throws with just 1:37 to go in the game. She was fouled again on the Stags next possession and made both free throws pushing the lead to 49-46.
The Gators were unable to get closer and the Stags closed out the 52-48 win.
The Gator’s were led by Moses with 13 points while Dates had 9, Griffin had 8 and Jacobs had 7 points.
Carter led the Stags with a game high 18 points while Gray chipped in with 13. Imani Levey and Kennedy Caldwell each scored 8 points.
The Stags will look to go back-to-back Thursday at Colonial Life Arena where they will take on upper state champion Greenville (22-6) a 57-44 winner over Gaffney.
