Latta pitcher Maddie Berry Class A Softball Player of the Year

Katelyn Johnson joins Berry on All-State team; Chayse Walters, Paisley Jackson also All-Region

           Latta Latta High School pitcher Maddie Berry has been selected as the Class A Softball Player of the Year by the South Carolina Association for Women’s Sports 

 

           Berry, a senior who has signed to play collegiately at Wofford, led the Vikings to the Class A state championship. Berry was a shutdown force in the circle and an offensive force in the batter’s box.

 

           Berry tossed 112 ½ innings, winning 17 of Latta’s 23 victories. She had 218 strikeouts and a 0.75 earned run average.

 

           Offensively, Berry led the Vikings in hitting with a .412 batting average and runs batted in with 34 while tying for the lead in triples with two. She also had five doubles and three home runs.

 

           Berry was joined on the All-State team by Katelyn Johnson. She led Latta in doubles with 10 and homers with six while driving in 28 runs.

 

           Both Berry and Johnson were selected top play in the North-South All-Star Game and both were selected to the All-Region 6-Class A team with Berry the Player of the Year. Johnson was named the Region Defensive Player of the Year.

 

4Joining them on the All-Region team are Chayse Walters and Paisley Jackson. Walters batted .347 with six doubles, a homer, nine stolen nd 14 RBI.

 

           Jackson batted .337 with one triple, a homer and 11 RBI. She was the No. 2 pitcher winning six games while tossing 52 innings. She had 75 strikeouts and 1.48 ERA.

 

           Erika Roberts and Samantha Townsend made the all-Region second team.

 

           MINSHEW REGION 6 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF YEAR

 

           Latta baseball player Seth Minshew was selected as the Region 6 Offensive Player of the Year. Minshew batted .536 with 12 doubles, two triples, three homers, 36 RBI and 40 runs scored.

 

           Joining him on the All-Region 6 first team were BW Berry and Mason Weatherford. Berry batted .348 with eight doubles, two triples and 34 RBI. He also pitched 33 innings with a 4.24 ERA.

 

Weatherford batted .289 with five doubles, a homer and 19 RBI. Weatherford tossed 29 2/3 innings and had a 2.12 ERA.

 

           Named to the All-Region second team were Ryan Perritte, Zach Lane and Logan Byrd.

 

           LATTA BOYS PLACE 5 TIMES IN STATE MEET

 

           The Latta boys track and field team had four individuals score points as well as a relay team to finish with 10 points in the Class A state meet on May 16 at Richland Northeast in Columbia.

 

           The highest placer for the Vikings was Henry Miller in the javelin in fifth place. Blake Hamilton finished eighth in the event.

 

           Thomas Jones finished sixth in the discus, while Colby Rowell was eighth in the shot put. The 4x100-meter relay team finished eighth.
