Former Silver Fox Tyler Boyd hired as new football head coach at Lamar

Lamar -- Tyler Boyd admits he had always had his eyes on the football head coaching job at Lamar High School. And why not? Boyd grew up around the storied program as his father, J.R. Boyd, led the Silvers Foxes to three Class A state titles in the early 2000s. Tyler was an All-State quarterback and safety for the school and was on the coaching staff as an assistant early in his coaching career.

“Lamar is my hometown,” Boyd said. “I always had my eye on it. It’s where I grew up.”

Now the job is his. Boyd was hired in late April, coming over from Williamsburg Academy to take the job.

“It’s better for me financially, it’s closer to where I live (Florence),” Boyd said of other reasons as to why he decided to return to the Darlington County school from which he graduated in 2008. “I’ll have the spring off so I can go see my son (9-yer-old Easton) play.

“It has a very big tradition and I’m excited in trying to continue that. There are big expectations here and I’m excited about that.”

Boyd was the head coach for both football and baseball at Williamsburg as well as serving as athletic director. He will only be the football head coach for Lamar.

Boyd was the football head coach at Williamsburg the past two seasons, going 22-3. Two of those losses came in SCISA state championship games, the Stallions playing for the AA title in 2023 and the Class A title this past season.

Boyd got to work with his new team for a couple of weeks, giving everybody the opportunity to become familiar with each other.

“We just went in helmets and worked out and started installing stuff,” Boyd said. “I got to learn all of the kids, I know all of them by name now. All the assistant coaches are coming back, so we’re not changing a whole lot.

“We’re a pretty young group right now. Of course, that is something that can be good and bad. We were to put in most of our defense and some of our offense in. But I wouldn’t say a lot.”

Boyd replaces Stephen Burris, who accepted the job at AAAAA Westwood. Burris was the Silver Foxes head coach for two seasons, going 9-4 each season. He led Lamar to a region title in his first season and took it to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs both seasons.
