McClam Ready For New Role At Carolina Academy
From reluctant coach when a JV teamed one, to dedicated coach helping student athletes grow is Tyler McClam's way of giving back to the community.

Lake City – The football program at Carolina Academy has been a rotating door when it comes to head coaches in recent years, but the newest hire for the job is hoping to bring stability to the proud program.
Tyler McClam is taking over as the athletic director and head football coach this fall, moving up from his role as an assistant. McClam also coached the baseball team last spring and has been coaching in various roles at the school for the last several years.
“I’ve been here in the program so I feel like that will help in terms of knowing the kids and the kids being comfortable with me,” McClam said. “We’ve had a lot of change in recent years but I wat these kids t know I have their back. They deserve some consistency and I hope to be able to provide that for them. So far, it’s been a good transition. We’re working hard this summer and moving forward.”
McClam grew up in Lake City, graduating from Lake City High in 2010. He was a football and baseball player in high school and played college football at Campbell University.
After college, McClam returned to Lake City and got involved as a claim adjuster for an insurance company.
“I never really wanted to be a coach but I loved sports,” he said. “My daughter was involved in basketball here and one year they needed a coach for the jayvee team so I took it. I got hooked. Being around the kids and helping them grow is very satisfying. It’s my way of giving back to this community.”
Taking on the role of football coach is enough to keep him busy but McCLam also is adjusting to his role as athletic director.
“It has been an adjustment but we are getting through it,” he said. “We have great people here. People always willing to help and answer questions. I just have to be organized and be available when needed.”
As for the football program, McClam has a clear idea of what the expectations are and he will work to get everyone on the same page.
“As far as schemes, we will be a lot like we were under coach Rankin,” he said. “We want to be physical and play with great effort. We want to play with more fire and energy, fly around and play like we want to be there.
“I am very fortunate to have this opportunity. I haven’t always wanted to be a coach but I am 100 percent committed to making an impact for these kids. I’m nervous but excited to get started. I can’t wait to be doing real football things to prepare for the season.”
