James Island Baseball Begins Defense Of State Titles

James Island enters this season as the top-ranked team in AAAAA baseball.

James Island – Some say that repeating a state championship run is more difficult that winning the initial title. Winning three in a row almost seems impossible.


The James Island baseball program will put that theory to the test in 2026. The Trojans won the AAAA state title in 2024 and won the AAAAA Division I state title in 2025. Title chase number three has begun this spring. James Island enters this season as the top-ranked team in AAAAA.


The Trojans are off to a solid start this spring, winning three of four games as part of the International Paper Classic field of contenders. The Trojans picked up wins over Seneca, Chapin and Southside Christian while dropping a game to AC Flora.


Coach Matt Spivey has a roster full of big game experience so no moment will be too big for the Trojans. Infielders Taj Marchand and Trip Ostergard are Division I commits and Marchand is considered one of the state’s top prospects.


Senior Connor Dantzler is back as a starting outfielder and Brody Dantzler will handle catching duties. Finn Pratt is a returning starter at first base.


Pitching also will be strong with Marchand, Ostergard, and Dawson Beldner. Charlie Becker is a transfer from Oceanside Collegiate.

Basketball, wrestling wrap up


The James Island wrestling team advanced all the way to the state duals finals before losing to Clover in the gold medal matchup. As for individuals, Max Johnson was the state runnerup at 150 pounds and Copeland Grooms was the silver medalist at 190 pounds. Jacob Rasamee finished fourth overall at 144 pounds.


The boys basketball team advanced to the third round of the Lower State playoffs before losing to region rival Ashley Ridge, 56-53. The final record was 13-14 overall and 8-2 in region play.


Josh Gladden led the team in scoring, averaging 12.7 points per game. Jeremiah Triplin added 6.8 points and Owen Adler was at 6.7 points and 2.4 assists. Matthew Gladden scored about six points per game.
