Johnson, Huggins, Watson All-Region softball selections

Florence Scotty Keefe knew his return to the dugout as the head coach for the Florence Christian School baseball team might not be an easy one. All things considered though, he was pretty happy with the results.

“I knew the season would be a challenge,” said Keefe, who guided the young team to an 11-10 record. “I did see the team learn and develop with significant improvement as the year unfolded. Our players showed great strides in the game and developed good work ethics on the field.”

The Eagles had four players selected to the All-SCISA Region 3-AAA team in Matthew Chace, Austin Johnson, Stone Poston and Matthew Pierce.

Chace, who played in the North-South All-Star Game, had a .386 batting averaf with 27 hits and five doubles. Johnson batted .294 while leading FCS in runs scored and stolen bases.

Poston held down first base and had a .278 average. Pierce led the team in runs batted in and had a .255 average.

Florence Christian’s top two pitchers were freshman Riley Minton and eighth-grader Layton Alexander. Minton had a 4-4 win-loss record with a 3.10 earned run average. Alexander was 3-3 with a 2.57 ERA.

The duo pitched 80 of FCS’ 120 total innings for the year.

3 FCS SOFTBALL PLAYERS ALL-REGION

Bailey Johnson, Anna Kate Huggins and Raegan Claire Watson were the three Florence Christian softball players selected to the All-Region III team.

Johnson, who was selected to play in the SCISA North-South All-Star Game, had a .574 average with five doubles and one triple among her 27 hits. Johnson had 32 runs and 13 RBI.

Huggins batted .442 with four doubles and three triples among her 23 hits. She had 14 RBI and 25 runs.

Watson led the Eagles in RBI with 17.
