Cross – A storm blew over Cross High School right before kickoff, delaying the start of its football
game on Friday for over an hour. Once the action started though, it was Baptist Hill that was caught in
a storm of “Blue Steel” as Cross beat its rival 52-0.
The Trojans improved to 8-1 on the season with their eighth consecutive win. The win clinched the
Region 8-Class A title and gives them homefield advantage throughout the upcoming state playoffs.
Cross has outscored its region opponents 148-0 in its three games with only a season ending battle
at Burke next Friday left on the schedule.
“I’m so proud of the team and the effort they showed tonight. We worked hard in the offseason with
the goal of winning the region championship and it all paid off tonight, Region Champs,” said Cross head
coach Shaun Wright. “We have improved every week because the team and the coaches pay attention
to the details every week.”
Despite the loss, the Bobcats (4-5, 2-1) will look to wrap up second in the region and secure a
first-round home game when they host St. John’s (2-6, 2-1) next week.
“We had a lot of mistakes that kept us from finishing drives. I’m proud of the kids for the effort tonight,
but we must play smarter,” said Bobcat head coach Marion Brown.
After the weather delay, the Trojans wasted no time in getting on the board as they went 65 yards in
six plays to take the lead when quarterback Tyler Mungin scored from the two. Kamelo “Sweet Pea” Jones
added the 2-point try and the Trojans led 8-0.
The Trojans struck again after “Sweet Pea” recovered a fumble at the 41-yardline. Six plays later,
freshman running back Mah’Ky Green scored his first touchdown of the night on a 16-yard run. “Sweet Pea”
added his second 2-point conversion, and the lead was 16-0 in the first quarter.
“Mah’Ky is one of the fastest kids I have coached, and he gives us a 1-2 punch,” Wright said.
Disaster struck again for the Bobcats on their next possession as a bad snap to the punter led to a
15-yard loss and set the Trojans up at the Bobcat 25-yard line. Two plays later, Jones would score his first
touchdown of the night on a 16-yard run. Mungin threw to Caden “Too Tall” Ramsey for the 2-point
conversion and the Trojans' lead was 24-0.
The Bobcats finally put together a drive on their next possession as they moved the ball to the
Trojan 21, but a fourth-down pass from Harold Gathers to Romaine Grant came up short and
the Bobcats turned the ball over on downs.
Cross needed just five plays to cover 79 yards to up their lead to 30-0 when "Sweet Pea"
scored from the 5. On the drive, "Sweet Pea" rushed for 27 yards while Green had 43 yards on
the drive. Baptist Hill then put together a 10-play drive right before halftime, but after reaching the
Cross 4, the Trojan defense forced four straight incompletions and the half ended with the
Trojans up 30-0.
The Bobcats received the second-half kickoff and three plays netted one yard. The punter
attempted to run for the first down and was stopped for no gain giving the Trojans the ball at the
Bobcat 35-yard line.
Jones scored his third touchdown of the night four plays later, on a 15-yard run and the lead
was 38-0 after another successful 2-point try.
On their next possession, the Bobcats put together a 17-play drive, moving the ball to the Trojans 6. They
could not finish the drive and the Trojans would take over at the 8.
Green would score his second touchdown of the night on an 80-yard run right up the gut. On the
night, Green would finish with a career high 159 yards rushing on just seven carries.
"Sweet Pea" would wrap up the scoring with his fourth touchdown on a 25-yard run. He would finish the
night with a team high 162 yards on 13 carries.
The Trojan defense bent a little, but it did not break as it held the high-powered Bobcat attack to 198
yards of total offense.
