Andrews – The 2022-23 athletic season was a solid one for the Andrews Yellow Jackets as several sports captured region championships while others secured playoffs spots with solid regular season play.
“We have some outstanding coaches that really care about our athletes and get the most out of them,” said Athletic Director and head football coach Scott Durham. “We have a great mixture of experienced veterans and young, energetic coaches that coach several sports, so they get to know the athletes and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.”
Coach Durham took over the football program in 2013 and the Yellow Jackets have become one of the top-class AA teams in the lower state. He will be receiving his 30-year service award at the SCACA in Greenville in late July.
The Yellow Jackets captured region titles in Volleyball, Baseball and Boys and Girls Track and Field during the in 2022-23 school year.
Teams that made the playoffs include the football team, boys’ and girls’ basketball along with softball. The football and boys’ basketball teams both reached the second round of the playoffs while the softball team reached the district eight finals before bowing out.
The Yellow Jackets gained the coaching services of Joy Weisner this past school year and she head coached both the volleyball and softball teams. Weisner was named head Volleyball coach in March of 2022, and three months later she was also named the head Softball coach. Results of the hire were a region championship in volleyball and district eight final in softball.
“Joy did an outstanding job in the short amount of time she had with her teams last year,” said coach Durham.
Head Track and Field head coach Theah Miller was recently named the Yellow Jackets cross country coach after leading the boys’ and girls’ track and field teams to region championships.
“We are excited to have Theah take over the cross country also,” said Coach Durham.
Rich Poston leads the baseball program with Walt Poston heading up the golf program.
The boys’ basketball program head coach is Lamar Brown, and he led his team into the second round of the Class AA playoffs last season.
Shirley Collins returns leads the girls’ basketball program.
When asked what was been the biggest adjustment since taking over the Athletic Director duties, in addition to his football duties, Coach Durham replied, “Time management is the toughest thing that I have to deal with.”
Last year Coach Durham coached the football team to a 9-3 record.
