Roebuck – After losing four starters from a team that went 29-2 and won Dorman High School its second straight AAAAA boys basketball state title, Cavaliers head coach Thomas Ryan knew things might be a bit difficult this season. At least by Dorman standards.
“We came into the year very inexperienced and it has shown in some tough losses, but overall, I’m pleased with the team and their progression,” Ryan said. “We need to play our best basketball over the next couple of weeks.”
The Cavaliers were 17-7 overall and 3-3 in Region 2. Christian Andrews was the lone returning starter, and he was leading the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game. He was also averaging 3.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists.
The other starters are Christian Gentry, Peden Breazeale, Keenan Arcega-Whiteside and Cason Gilliam.
Gentry was the other double-figure scorer with a 10.3 average and a team high 2.5 assists and 1.9 steals. Arcega-Whiteside was just missing on being a double-figure scorer with a 9.9 average while being the leading rebounder at 6.9.
Gilliam was averaging 5.8 points and Breazeale 5.3
Dorman had three other players who had played in all of the games in Bracyn Burns (4.3 ppg), Jaden McNeil (4.7 ppg) and Will Bush (4.1 ppg)
DORMAN GIRLS 3-2 IN REGION
The Dorman’s girls basketball squad started 3-2 in region play while sporting a 15-8 overall record.
Morgan White, a 6-foot-4-inch sophomore, led the team in scoring at 11.3 while averaging 7.7 rebounds and a team high 1.7 blocked shots. Senior Nakiyah Kelly was the leading rebounder at 9.7 and second leading scorer at 8.4
Sophomore Rihanna Wallace and freshman Kimora Evans were both averaging 8.0 points Wallace led in assists at 3.5, while Evans led in steals at 3.4.
Senior Jenna Cothran was averaging 7.2 points, freshman Makayla Moore 5.8 and freshman Sidney Davis 3.5.
DORMAN PART OF REGION 2-AAAAA IN REALIGNMENT
Dorman is the largest school in the state with 3.108 students, according to numbers released by the South Carolina High School League with its reclassification for the next two school years. Dorman will be part of the 8-team Region 2.
Dorman will again be joined in Region 2 by old foes Boiling Springs, Gaffney, Byrnes and Spartanburg. They will be joined in the region by Eastside, Riverside and Wade Hampton.
Those three schools moved up from AAAA with the expansion of AAAAA to 54 teams.
