Florence – There are inexperienced teams and then there’s the Florence Christian School girls basketball squad.
The Lady Eagles have no seniors on their 8-player roster and just two juniors to go with four sophomores and two freshmen. They lost two seniors from last year’s 15-8 team, and they were the leading scorers in Z’nei Middleton and Mary Margaret Sterling.
“This is the most inexperienced team I've ever had,” said veteran Florence Christian head coach Neil Minton. “I feel like they have worked really hard and overachieved so far. We are constantly improving.”
The Lady Eagles are 10-10 overall and 3-4 in SCISA Region 2-AAA.
Each player on the team is part of the rotation, according to Minton. The top player is one of the youngest.
“Emerson Poston has had a sensational freshmen season,” Minton said.
Poston was averaging 12.1 points per game to go with 7.6 rebounds, 4.6 steals and 3.5 assists. Each of those are team highs.
Sophomore Anna Kate Huggins was averaging 6.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.6 steals. Sophomore Leah Lambert was pulling in 4.7 rebounds to go with 2.6 points, while sophomore Demi Greene was averaging 4.3 points.
The other players on the team are sophomore Susanna Lee (1.7 ppg), junior Karley Hickson (1.6 ppg), junior Elise Hicks (1.3 ppg) and freshman Lyla Broach (1.0 ppg).
Minton said there are plenty of areas where there is room for improvement.
“We are small and undersized so we have to really rebound and help each other defensively,” Minton said. “We have to generate some easy buckets in transition and half court offenses.”
FCS BOYS STRUGGLING
The Florence Christian boys basketball team have only won three of its first 18 games and is 1-5 in region play.
Senior Dylan Greene was leading the Eagles in scoring with a 19.8 average. Sophomore Taylor Greene was averaging 18.1 points and 5.7 rebounds.
Sophomore Michael Wyatt led the team in rebounding at 6.7 while scoring at a 5.4 clip. Senior Juels Huntley was averaging 4.4 points, and sophomore Kayden Parker was averaging 4.0 points and 3.7 rebounds.
