Clinton does beat Atlantic Collegiate 5-1 to take 1-0 lead in AA baseball title series

The big winner in the South Carolina High School League softball and baseball state championship series on Tuesday was the weather.

Four softball games and six baseball games were scheduled to be played. All of the softball games and four of the six baseball games were postponed due to rain and/or unplayable fields.

Only two games were played on Tuesday. Southside Christian School beat Oceanside Collegiate Academy 7-2 in the best-of-3 AAA baseball opener, while Clinton topped Atlantic Collegiate Academy 5-1 on Crosley Field at Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach in Game 1 of the AA baseball series.

The Red Devils, who improved to 29-3 on the season, can win the state title on Wednesday when they play host to the Armada beginning at 5 p.m.

Camden Finley picked up the win for CHS. He limited ACA, which dropped to 29-4, to two hits while striking out eight. Isaac Cain pitched the final inning, striking out one and allowing no hits.

Atlantic Collegiate took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Cam Craft drew a walk, stole second base and scored on a single by sophomore Blandyn Miller.

The Red Devils took the lead in the top of the second with two runs. William Addison and Angel Vargas reached on errors and moved up a base on a groundout. Two batters later, Logan Johnson singled home Addison and Vargas.

CHS added a run in the fifth to make it 3-1 and picked up two insurance runs in the sixth.

ACA junior pitcher Eli Chowning went the distance, allowing just four hits while striking out five. Only one of the runs was earned as the Armada committed five errors.

Addison had a hit and scored two runs, and Johnson had a hit, a run and two runs batted in to lead Clinton. Carter Finley had a hit and a run, while Tanner Finley had the other hit. Vargas scored the other run.

Miller had a hit and an RBI for Atlantic Collegiate. Sophomore Gavin Street had the other hit.

By David Shelton Senior Writer Columbia – Weather played its usual role in the 2026 SCHSL state championship soccer games on May 21-23 at Memorial Stadium in Columbia. If it wasn’t too hot or humid, it was storming and dropping tons of rain. By the time the final whistle had blown, it was 1:40 a.m. Sunday morning. That final contest, the Division II-AAAAA finals, saw Eastside beat Chapin, 1-1(3-2 on penalty kicks) after 30 minutes of overtime. Eastside keeper Brandon Jaramillo proved to be the hero in penalty kicks, swatting away successive attempts. Eastside then got goals from Frazor Ka zian and Hunter Kazian to complete the win. ‘These boys have so much heart and determination and I never count them out,” said Eastside coach Steven Wood . “I think the region we play in, and the schedule we play, prepares us for something like this.” Eastside has won seven state titles, but this is the first since 2022. Chapin ended the season with an 18-5 record, and all five losses came in penalty kicks. “I hate it for these guys because they do everything we want them to do,’ said Chapin coach Bob Taylor. Despite the long delay in starting, both teams seemed fresh and aggressive early. In the 16 th minute, Eastside’s Ryder Martin headed in a pass from Asher Wilson for a 1-0 lead. Later in the half, Chapin got the equalizer on a penalty kick by Lucas Rogers . In the penalty kick phase, Chapin led 2-1 after successful kicks from Sam Szarkawski and Cole Keys . Chapin keeper Cooper Hughes made two saves and Chapin had momentum. But Jaramillo rose to the occasion, and stymied Chapin’s chances. His clincher was off the foot of Gabe Salisbury .
