SUMMERTON – Clarendon Hall was on Cloud 9 in Week 1, celebrating its first win in 2 ½ years with a 27-0 win over Thomas Heyward.
After Week 2’s 50-0 loss to Calhoun Academy, Saints coach Shane Wallace looks to the next step.
“We’ve got to show up more prepared, for sure,” Wallace said.
But there were plenty of positives so far this season for Clarendon Hall, such as linebacker/fullback Wyatt Simpson.
“He wants to excel on the field really bad,” Wallace said. “He gets after it and would love a look at the next level. So, he plays like that a lot. He’s a hard runner. And when he runs the ball, it’s hard to tackle him. When he’s a linebacker, he can read the offense well and play well downfield.”
The offensive line, meanwhile, is made of Davern Patel, Currin McElroy, Harrison Denny, Jacob Morris and Jake Roberson. Cole Richburg is at tight end.
Jack Wyatt Reynolds is at flex.
“He’s a freshman, but he plays at a level that’s above freshman,” Wallace said. “He’s still got a lot of learning to do, but he does really well at that position.
Joey Hatchell, meanwhile, is at quarterback/free safety.
“He’s a very smart kid, and we’re trying to utilize that,” Wallace said. “He does so many things well with his feet. And he has done a good job of being able to read the defense and make decisions from that.”
The Saints run the ball “65-70%” of the time. So, those carries are shared by Andrew Pritcher, Caleb Poplin and Grayson Holliday.
“Grayson is still young, but he’s learning. He’s going to be good one day. He’s just a freshman,” Wallace said. “Andrew runs really well and finds the hole really well and makes something out of nothing. And Caleb was hurt the first week, but he got some playing time this past week at tailback.”
T.J. Young is at cornerback and Bobby Singleton is also at cornerback.
Wallace now plans to get the Saints back on track.
“We’re young, very young. We have four seniors on the whole team,” Wallace said. “We’ve got to learn how to recover and bounce back, and this is our week to do that (7:30 p.m. Friday at Orangeburg Prep).
“I have been on film all weekend trying to figure how we do that,” he added. “I’ve always been a coach about attitude and character. If we as coaches can get the players to follow us, then we can bounce back and get our season rolling again.”
