Summerville – The Summerville Boys Basketball team has had its ups and downs this season as it works to replace the talent it graduated in the Spring.
Summerville lost its long-time coach and many key players at the end of last season, including its leading scorer, who was an All-State player, and its leading rebounder. However, this season’s squad does have some talent and new head coach Michael Jenkins served as an assistant coach for the team last year.
“I feel very optimistic,” Jenkins said. “The expectation is for this young group to be very competitive.”
Senior point guard Josiah Taylor is the only returning starter. He averaged 4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game as a junior. Senior Zavarion (ZJ) Jenkins is a returning letterman with wing experience and freshman Reed Robinson saw some action at guard with the varsity team last season before he even entered high school. The two of them, along with senior guard Damani White and junior forward Noah Harrison, are expected to be big contributors.
Others on the roster include senior Kaden Palmer, juniors Kymani Robinson, Dakaden Ravenell and Josiah Deas, sophomores Lamell Grant, Austin Tate and Yemilier Vazquez and freshmen Kaden Husley and Micah Jones.
Summerville entered the week with an 8-7 record with a 1-2 mark in Region 8-AAAAA. The Green Wave has wins over Stratford, Lexington, Lucy Beckham, Wando, Westminster Catawba Christian, First Baptist School and Stall.
Summerville travels to West Ashley Jan. 20 and host rival Fort Dorchester at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23.
Lady Green Wave
The roster for the 2025-26 Summerville Girls Basketball varsity includes more eighth-graders than it does seniors.
“I have great leadership in the locker room and that is the most important thing,” said Summerville coach Calvin Davis. “On the floor we are so young we just don’t have the leadership we’ve had in the previous years, but in the future this will be a tough team.”
The team finished last season with a 24-4 record and came closer than it ever has to claiming a state championship, falling 62-56 March 7 during the 5A, Division I Girls Basketball state title game. However, Summerville lost all five starters from that team, including an All-State player.
This season’s team only has two seniors. It has four juniors, two sophomores, two freshmen and three eighth-graders.
“We are trying to develop a bunch of players to play different roles,” Davis said. “We have a lot of pieces we are trying to put together.”
Sophomore Madelyn Marsaa and juniors Jordan Espinal and Destinee Grant are returning lettermen who have been a big part of the program and are being leaned on to set the tone. Ciara Grant and Telissah Johnson are also back and looking to make the most of their senior season.
Other members of the team are Addelyn Chapman, Kendall Grant, Abigail Creel, Adaliah Bostic, Da’Nyla Riley, Gabrielle White, Kynadie Palmer and Ariel Beeler.
The Lady Green Wave is out to a 6-10 start with a 1-2 mark in the region. The wins came over Battery Creek, Orangeburg-Wilkinson, Burke, Stratford, Cane Bay and Stall. Summerville took Ashley Ridge into overtime Jan. 16 before falling 53-50 to the Swamp Foxes.
Green Wave Wrestling
Summerville nearly upset the top-ranked 5A, Division 1 wrestling team Jan. 5. The Green Wave entered the Jan. 15 match against James Island ranked fourth in the division.
The Trojans, which lost to Summerville during a December tournament, claimed a 37-25 win in the rematch at Summerville.
“That was a really good high-school match,” said Summerville coach Daryl Tucker. “I have a lot of respect for those guys and what they are doing over there, but man we had our chances. There were two overtime matches tonight that could have gone either way so I’m pleased with the effort.”
The 190-pound match pitted James Island’s Copeland Grooms, ranked second in the state for the division, and Summerville’s Eli Pressley, who is ranked fifth. After regulation ended in a 7-7 tie, the match was decided in Grooms’ favor by a single point due to an unsportsmanlike conduct officiating call Summerville fans vocally disagreed with. The Trojans also took the next match at 215 when Morris White pinned his opponent in an overtime period.
In the 138 class, Summerville’s Dearrian Ford claimed a major decision over Trent Collins. Ford is unranked while Collins is ranked seventh in the class.
Summerville’s Ridge Rollison (ranked 4th at 106) and Tytrell Fripp (175) won their class by technical fall. Kayleb Pinckney (6th at 114), Austin Stitner (120) and Mason Whisenhunt (157) claimed a major decision. Trenton Anderson (126) won by regular decision.
Summerville dropped to 14-5 in dual matches with a 1-1 mark in Region 8-AAAAA. The Green Wave travels to Ashley Ridge for a key region match at 7 p.m. Jan. 21.
