Saluda wins AA upper state; Summerville, St. James claim AAAAA series openers

Saluda – The Saluda High School softball team defended its AA upper state title by beating Chesnee 7-2 on Monday in the championship round of the upper state tournament at the SHS field.
The Tigers advance to the best-of-3 state championship series for the second straight year and will face lower state champion Chesterfield. The series will start on Tuesday with Saluda, which is 27-3 on the season, playing host to the 17-9 Rams beginning at 6 p.m.
The second game will be played on Thursday in Chesterfield, also beginning at 6 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be played on Saturday at a neutral site.
SHS, which finished undefeated in the upper state tournament, took control of the game immediately, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. It added a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to go up 7-0.
The Eagles, who finish the year with a 22-9 mark, scored their two runs in the sixth.
Kylee McGlohorn picked up the win in the circle with a complete-game effort. She scattered eight hits and didn’t walk a batter while striking out six. Only one of the runs was earned.
The Tigers had just six hits but took advantage of four CHS errors, three walks and two hit batters.
Miller Martin hit a solo home run to lead Saluda. She finished with two runs scored and a run batted in.
Kam Campbell had a double, a run and an RBI, Reese Shaw and Amy Scorcia both had a hit and an RBI, and Nyla Jordan had a hit and a run.
Zoey Springs had a hit, and Ashlynn Vereen and Ava Martin each scored a run.
Summerville 6
Byrnes 4
Duncan – Summerville scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat Byrnes 6-4 on Monday in the opening game of the AAAAA Division I championship series at the BHS field.
The Green Wave, who improved to 29-1, can clinch the state title on Wednesday when they play host to the 27-6 Rebels beginning at 6 p.m.
The score was tied 4-4 going to the ninth, and the inning started with Katie Guilliam on second base. Daphne Frady drew a walk before Maeven Moreno doubled to score both base runners.
Guilliam, who has signed to play with Missouri, led Summerville’s 10-hit attack with three hits and one RBI. Moreno finished with two hits and the two RBI.
Frady, Gracelyn Cantrell and Delaney Hayes each had a hit.
Frady ended up getting the victory in the circle. She worked 8 1/3 innings, scattering eight hits while striking out six.
Memorie Melton and Haven Holesm both had two hits and an RBI to lead Byrnes. Addie Durrah had a hit and two RBI, while Garrison Aiken and Bayleigh Murray each had a hit.
St. James 5
Indian Land 3
Indian Land – St. James scored all of its runs in the top of the sixth inning to beat Indian Land 5-3 on Monday at the IL field in the opening game of the AAAAA Division II championship series.
The Sharks, who improved to 31-1, can win state on Wednesday when they play host to the 25-7 Warriors beginning at 6 p.m.
Sophia Roloson drew a walk to start the St. James sixth. Callie Centracchio singled before McKenzie Kraus singled to right field to drive in Roloson. Centracchio scored on a throwing error on the play to make it 3-2.
Kraus, Payton Cox and Khloee Burton would all score on a throwing error to make it 5-3.
Indian Land took a 1-0 lead in the first. Avery Clark was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI groundout by Riley Murphy.
The Warriors added two runs in the fourth to make it 3-0. Layla Crandall drew a walk before Logan Thomas smacked a 2-run homer.
Thomas’ blast was one of two IL hits, the other coming from Clark.
Raegan Tibbitts got the win for St. James. She walked just one to go with the two hits allowed while striking out four.
Olivia Miller was the losing pitcher, going the distance while allowing just five hits and striking out nine.
Centracchio and Kraus both had two hits for the Sharks with Cox picking up the other.
