Take a look at the Week 4 schedule

Region play begins in several regions in the new South Carolina High School League’s five classifications since reclassification on Friday.

Four of the eight regions in AAAAA – 1, 2, 3 and 5 – start up along with regions 2, 3, 4 and 5 in of 6-region AAAA. In AA, Region 7 is the only one of the seven regions in AA starting while 6-region Class A will have regions 5 and 6 opening.

AAA is the only classification not starting region play this week.

One of the big region matchups in AAAAA has undefeated Gaffney going on the road to face fellow unbeaten Boiling Springs in Region II. Gaffney is the top-ranked team in the High School Sports Report’s AAAAA Division II poll while Boiling Springs is fifth in the Division I poll.

Though not a region contest, another big AAAAA matchup has undefeated Chapin going on the road to face unbeaten Summerville. The Green Wave is ranked second in Division I while Chapin is seventh in Division II.

AAAA will have two games involving ranked teams. From Region 3, No. 11 A.C. Flora will travel to Rock Hill to take on No. 4 South Pointe. Region 5 will have defending AAAA lower state champion and fifth-ranked South Florence in Dalzell to take on No. 8 Crestwood.

Region 7-AA has no ranked matchups but still has a couple of interesting games. Mullins, which was winless last season in its first year under head coach Marc Lowery, will be trying to improve to 5-0 against SCHSL newcomer Atlantic Collegiate. The Auctioneers are ranked 10th in AA.

Fifteenth-ranked East Clarendon will play host to Lake City. This is an interesting matchup because of the fact EC was a Class A school last year while Lake City dropped down from AAA to AA.

Some other interesting matchups this week has defending AAAAA state champion Dutch Fork, which just moved to the top of the Division I poll, at home against defending AA state champion and AAA No. 7 Oceanside Collegiate. Defending AAA state champion Daniel, ranked second in AAAA, will play host to former AAA school Clinton, now ranked third in AA.

AAA No. 1 Dillon will be in Kelleytown to take on AAAA No. 10 Hartsville, AAA No. 11 Newberry at AA No. 11 Fairfield Central, Class A No. 3 Bamberg-Ehrhardt at AA No. 6 Woodland and AA No. 5 Chesterfield at Class A No. 13 McBee.

Big games in SCISA will have 2-time defending AAAA state champion Hammond at home against defending AAA state champion Hilton Head Christian Academy, defending 11-man state champion Jefferson Davis Academy playing host to defending runner-up Holly Hill Academy, Class A No. 1 Williamsburg Academy at home against AAA No. 2 Florence Christian School and Class A No. 3 Beaufort Academy visiting Class A No. 4 Dorchester.

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
