Patriots in search of a new baseball head coach

Estill Kelsey Swaim will be the new athletic director for Patrick Henry Academy for the 2025-26 school year. She is hoping one of the late hires she’ll be able to make is herself – as the softball head coach.

That was to be Swaim’s job last year, but PHA didn’t have enough players to field a team.

“I’m hoping that we have enough,” said Swaim, who was named the athletic director after Justin Scott stepped down. “I’m sure that we have enough to get things going on the middle school level.”

Swaim’s going to be looking to hire a new baseball head coach after Cary Harriott stepped down. Kristen Wemes will coach volleyball and be the assistant athletic director, while Mike Mathis will coach the girls soccer team and Ronaldo Gonzales the boys soccer coach.

Joe Gray Peeples is back for his fourth season as the football head coach. After leading the Patriots to the SCISA Class A state title in 2023, the Patriots went 4-7 last season.

Jackson Wiggins is the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator and has been with Peeples all three years. Joe Sobey will be the defensive coordinator and coach the linebackers. Brodie Gibson will coach the offensive skill position players and the defensive backs. Hunter Turner will coach the tight ends and will handle the strength and conditioning program.

“He’s an integral part of getting our kids stronger and keeping them in shape,” Peeples said of Turmer.
