Walterboro – While his coaching career has included several stops along the way, Dr. Chris Myers really never left the Colleton County community.

For many years, even while coaching at various schools, Myers ran the recreation department in Colleton County. He also coached the Colleton County High as a football assistant and junior varsity basketball coach. He also has coached at Dorchester Academy, John Paul II and Hampton County High. In addition, he was the athletic director at Dorchester Academy and assistant athletic director at John Paul II.

The opportunity to return full-time as a part of the Colleton County school district was too hard to pass up. In January, Myers began his role as the Executive Director of Athletic Operations for the school district. Essentially, he oversees all athletics at the high school and middle school levels in the district.

“I am very excited about being back in Colleton County and I look forward to the challenges ahead,” said Myers, who received his Doctorate of Education in Sports Management from the US Sports Academy. “It has been an easy transition for me since I had strong previous relationships with the coaches here. Athletic success and motivating our student-athletes to excel on and off the field is something I take very seriously.”

Superintendent Jessica Williams welcomes Myers to the district’s leadership team.

“The district is elated to welcome Dr. Myers to team Colleton,” said Williams. “Dr. Myers’ experience as a previous athletic director, coach, and physical education teacher aligns perfectly to support our district’s athletic programs. We are confident that he will model the way by inspiring a shared vision for our student-athletes to reach their highest potential, both on and off the field.”

Myers reports most of the coaching staff will return intact for the 2025-26 school year, with a few exceptions. A new baseball coach will be announced soon as former coach Jermale Paige will take on more duties as an assistant principal and assistant athletic director.

Samir Mwangi will take over as volleyball coach and Elsie Huffman will coach girls golf. Chip Wiggins will coach girls soccer.

Myers is forming a list of improvements and programs that he would like to see over the next few years. One major concern is practice facilities that can accommodate all the teams.

“We have to be creative and work together to make sure our teams can practice,” he said.
