South Florence's Bostick, Wilson’s Leonard Region 5-AAAA Basketball Players of Year
Both are All-State selections as well with Leonard being tabbed AAAA Boys Player of Year
Florence – It was a “pretty good” sseason for the South Florence High School girls basketball team.
All the Bruins did was post a 25-4 overall record and go 10-2 to share the Region 5-AAAA title with city rival Wilson. They then went on a roll to the AAAA Lower State championship game where they lost to eventual champion North Augusta.
South Florence head coach David Robinson said hard work in the summer made the difference in the winter.
“I think we had a successful season based on the summer,” Robinson said. “We were able to gt kids in the gym and went to some camps to build a winning mindset.”
Being able to have freshman Harmony Bostick in those summer workouts as well as on the court during the season helped a lot too. Bostick was selected to the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association AAAA All-State team as well as being chosen as the Region Player of the Year.
Bostick averaged a double-double of 22.3 points per game and 10.1 rebounds. She also averaged 3.0 steals.
“What makes Harmony, to me, such a great player is her willingness to learn and to be coached,” Robinson said. “She is at all non-ball workouts and takes coaching so well.”
Bostick was joined on the All-Region first team by senior Allyson Watson and junior Amari Gamble. Watson was the second leading scorer at 11.7 while leading South Florence in steals at 4.0 to go with 3.1 assists and 4.7 rebounds. Gambe led the team in assists at 4.5 to go with 2.7 steals, 5.4 rebounds and 5.4 points.
Junior Madison Randolph was a second team selection. Randolph averaged 6.9 points and 4.0 rebounds.
Wilson had a pretty good year as well. The Tigers were 20-5 overall with the aforementioned 10-2 region record. They fell to Gray Collegiate Academy n the second round of the playoffs.
Senior Leah Spears was selected as the Region Defensive Player of the Year. Spears averaged 4.2 steals per contest to go with 3.7 rebounds and 10.9 points.
Senior Zoey Miller was named to the first team. She was Wilson’s leading scorer with a 14.0 average. She also averaged 3.5 steals,
Senior Jordan Nelson was a second tam selection. She averaged 7.4 points and 4.7 rebounds.
Another key contributor was junior Logan Murray, who averaged 13.1 points to go with 6.7 rebounds and 2.9 steals,
Nadia Brooks was West Florence’s selection to the Region 5-AAAAA All-Region squad.
WILSON’S LEONARD PILES UP ACCOLADES
The Wilson boys’ 6-foot-7-inch junior 5-star recruit Josh Leonard has been picking up plenty of individual postseason hardware.
Leonard was not only selected to the AAAA All-State team, but he was also deemed to be the AAAA Player of the Year. He was also chosen as the Region 5 Player of the Year.
Leonard averaged a double-double for the Tigers, who went 21-7 and reached the quarterfinals of the state playoffs. He averaged 22.3 points and 12.9 rebounds to go with 2.5 assists, 1.5 blocked shots and 2.8 steals.
Senior Kiauj Allen was also an All-State pick as well as being first team All-Region. Allen, who will play in the North-South All-Star Game on March 28, averaged 10.0 points and 5.6 rebounds.
Junior Isaiah Addison and senior Jayden Gerald were also All-Region first team. Addison averaged 11.7 points, while Gerald averaged 10.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists.
Junior Josh Gamble was a second team selection. He averaged 9.1 points and 3.6 rebounds.
South Florence finished the season with a 13-13 record and lost to Gray Collegiate in the first round. The Bruins were led by Zion Johnson, who was second team All-Region.
Johnson, a senior, averaged 13.5 point, 2.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.9 steals.
Junior Adrian Singletary averaged 10.9 points and 9.3 rebounds.
West Florence’s Bryant Graham was selected to the Region 5-AAAAA All-Region team.
