Olivia Huck, Madison Sherman selected for Laurens Academy Hall of Fame

Crusaders honor student-athletes at annual athletic banquet

Laurens – Seniors Olivia Huck and Madison Sherman were inducted into the Laurens Academy Hall of Fame during the school’s annual athletic banquet on May 17.

 

Huck was inducted for girls basketball while Sherman was inducted for volleyball.

 

Huck was the SCISA Region 4-Class A Player of the Year for the second straight year. Huck, who scored over 1,700 career points, averaged 18.9 points per game last season to go with 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals. She was also named to the Region 4 All-Tournament team. Huck shot 44 percent from the field and 76.5 percent from the free throw line.

   

Huck was selected as the basketball team’s Player of the Year. The Defensive MVP was Rylee Ballard, Emily Kate Moore won the Joshua 1:9 Award and Madisyn Graham won the TNT Award.

   

Sherman was also a 2-time Region Player of the Year for volleyball and was an All-State selection both years as the Crusaders won consecutive Class A state championships

 

           Sherman was the team MVP while her sister, Campbell Sherman, was the Offensive MVP. Olivia Suttles was the Defensive MVP, Emily Suttles won the Coaches Award and Huck won the Faithful Award.

 

Huck was also the softball MVP and was the Region Player of the Year and a North-South All-Star Game selection. She had a .469 batting average and led the team in hits with 23, home runs with three and runs batted in with 25. In the circle, she had a 10-5 win-loss record and struck out 125 batters to go with a 1.11 earned run average.

 

Senior catcher Emily Suttles was the Defensive MVP. The All-Region and North-South All-Star selection batted .200 and scored 13 runs with a .950 fielding percentage and 126 putouts.

 

The Coaches Award went to Catherine Riddle and Lillie Davenport was Most Improved.

 

           Evan Asalone was Offensive MVP for baseball while Braydon Burke was Defensive MVP. Hack Hardy won the Coaches Award and Elijah Hornberger was Most Improved.

 

           Boys basketball award winners were Burke for Offensive MVP, Garrison Vaughan for the Coaches Award, Asalone for Most Improved and Garrett Murphy for the Toughness Award. Huck was Senior MVP for sporting clays while Carter Medlin was Most Improved, Wyatt Little was Rookie MVP and Eli Garrett won the Coach’s Award.

 

           For football, Murphy was the Offensive MVP and Nathan Bell was the Defensive MVP. Vaughan was the Lineman of the Year, Caleb Hardy was the Big Wheel winner and Hack Hardy won the Coach Kirk/Kirton Leadersship Award.

 

           For cheerleading, Moore was Most Spirited, Davenport and Riddle both won the Captain Award, Stuti Patel was Most Improved and Campbell Sherman won the Coaches Award.

 

           The Founders Award goes to athletes who played three sports. Receiving the award were Morgan Bolding, Hornberger, Makayla Lindley, Caroline Mullinax, Bell, Braydyn Dorn, Graham, Jay Riddle, Jared Willard, Davenport, Hannah Ervin, Huck, Catherine Riddle, Hector Rubio and Emily Suttles.

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
