Lamar – Things didn’t go as hoped for the Lamar High School football team in its debut under head coach Tyler Boyd. The Silver Foxes dropped a 22-13 decision to Darlington  on the road on August 22.

“I thought we competed well and played hard,” Boyd said of going up against the Darlington County rival, a AAAA school compared to Class A LHS. “We had too many penalties, too many undisciplined penalties. We can’t be doing that. That and busted coverages on our part was a summary of the game.”

Zori Pierce, back for his fourth season as Lamar’s starting quarterback, completed 10 of 16 passes ffor 186 yards. However, he tossed two interceptions with no TD passes. He rushed for 48 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.

The Silver Foxes had only 90 yards rushing on 26 carries. That was a disappointment to Boyd.

“We still didn’t run the ball like I hoped to,” said Boyd, who played quarterback at Lamar for his father, J.R. Boyd. “We didn’t have any big plays.”

Starting running back Nygel Eaddy had 28 yards on six carries. The other starting running back is DQ Green, while TJ Samuel and Jaquez Dargan will get carries as well.

Senior wide receiver Julian Morris was Pierce’s top target, catching four passes for 105 yards. Kamil McCoy and Jaylen Morris are the other wide receivers/

Robert Cooper and Lamont Williams are seeing time at tight end.

The starters on the offensive line are Messiah Simes at left tackle, D’Vaughn Locust at right tackle, Roy Vest at left guard, Izayah McCullough at right guard and Tom Katko at center. Alvin Jenkins and Liston Todd will see time as well.

LHS will use a 3-man front on defense with Locust, Travis Durant and Cooper starting. However, Simes, Todd and Jenkins will be in the rotation.

Green and Eaddy are both starting at linebacker. Dargan and Kenile Johnson are sharing one spot and Williams and Nigerion Quillen the other.

Pierce and McCoy are two of the secondary starters. Ethan Drew and Jeremiah Moses are sharing one spot and Jaylen Morris and Samuel the other.

Green led the defensive effort against Darlington, coming up with 10 tackles. Williams and Locust both had a quarterback sack, and Pierce finished with an interception.

Julian Morris is the punter, while Isaiah Chacon is the placekicker.

Lamar will play at Green Sea Floyds on August 29.
