Dorman has strong spring sports season

Obeke finishes second in girls 400 hurdles in AAAAA meet

            Roebuck Dorman High School had 68 student-athletes selected to or qualify for their respective All Region 2-AAAAA teams in its 10 spring sports.

 

           Five players were named All-Region from the region champion girls soccer team. They were senior Brecken Brown, senior Hannah Inman, junior Abigail Caston, junior Katie Hennesy and junior Natalie Schulz. Head coach Carlos Osorio was the Region Coach of the Year.

 

           The region champion girls track and field team had 18 earn All-Region honors. They were seniors Eryn Boyce-Martin, Elizabeth Ludwick, Madie McKelvey and Molly Yarborough, juniors Kalli Faulkner, Dara Gray, Ella Tombulet and Aliyah Littlejohn, sophomores Lexsy Barrientos, Michaela Oglesby, Rebecca Okebe, Aggie Romansky, Chelsea Zikusooka and Jordayn Ratliff, freshmen Ella Bowen and Peyton Grace Kellert, eighth-grader Evyn Kate Dill and seventh-grader Kamari McHam.

 

           All-Region selections for the girls lacrosse team were seniors Nyah Elmer, McKenzie Pierce and Sydney Spelman. The three softball All-Region picks were junior Leah Taylor, sophomore Logan Smith and freshman Kayleigh Rapalee.

 

           The boys track team, which also won the region title, had 17 All-Region performers. They were seniors Nathan Edwards, Demetrick Foster, Makell Hiers, Liam McNulty, Josh McPherson and Noah Yarborough, juniors Cam Bailey, Andrew Cleland, Tyler Davis, Joseph McBride and Luke McKelvey and sophomores Donovan Anderson, Kentavion Anderson, Charlie Deetz, Jamier Gaston, Kadarus Hainsworth and Christian Waring. Head coach Jeff Johns was the Region Coach of the Year.

 

           In baseball, senior Mitch Wilson was chosen to play for the South Carolina Select team. Senior Noah McGarity was selected to play in the North-South All-Star Series. All-region picks were seniors Brayden Parton and Campbell Whitener, juniors Colton Earnhardt and Coleman Brown and sophomore Palmer Hornick.

 

           In boys lacrosse, seniors Adam Goudelock and Lucas Kight were North-South selections as well as All-Region picks. They were joined on the All-Region team by senior Owen Hendricks and juniors Dru Darby, Hallston McKenzie and Hayden Smith.

 

           Junior Casey Kosney and sophomore Will Ruth were golf All-Region picks, soccer All-Region performers were seniors Michael Bayiha and Eric Dondiego, junior Victor Bibiano-Morales and sophomore Jesus Lugo-Sanchez, and senior Nate Helms, junior Carter Pitts and freshman Walker Timms were tennis All-Region selections.

 

           OBEKE FINISHES SECOND IN 400 HURDLES IN AAAAA MEET

 

           Rebecca Obeke finished second in the 400-meter hurdles in the AAAAA girls track state meet on May 17 at Spring Valley High's Harry Parone Stadium in Columbia, while the boys 4x100- and 4x800-meter relay teams also finished second.

 

           Okebe also finished fourth in the 100 hurdles. Molly Yarborough was fourth in the pole vault, Jordayn Ratliff was seventh in the triple jump and the 4x8 relay team finished fourth while the 4x1 team finished seventh.

 

           Christian Waring scored points with third-place finishes in the discus and shot put, Jamier Gaston finished fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump and Joseph McBride was sixth in the 3,200-meter run

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
