Former head coaches Scott Cook, Ed Brogdon new Panthers asistants

Lake City – At this time a year ago, the Lake City High School football program was in a state

of shock. Head coach Ronnie Baker was severely injured n an automobile accident and the remainder of the coaching staff was trying to fill holes while handling the life-altering injuries to their friend.

Jamison Estep stepped into the role of head coach, and the Panthers went 4-7 while making the

AAA state playoffs. Baker is still on the long road to recovery, but Estep and his staff are obviously more

prepared for what may come this year.

Along with returning veteran assistants in Kevin Graham, Lorenzo McFadden, Seneca Barron

and Josh Reynolds, Estep has added two assistants with gobs of head coaching experience in Scott Cook and Ed Brogdon.

Estep said that has made it a much easier go this summer.

“The veteran presence we have on the football staff is a major asset to the program,” Estep said.

“We have multiple coaches who have head football coaching experience as well as head coaching

experience in other sports. Leaning on their experience, everyone understands what it takes to build and run a competitive program.

“Overcoming a major crisis that the Lake City community endured prior to the start of last season

was an incredible task. A lot of people and coaches had to step up into different roles that they weren't

used to last year. This year the staff is experienced and comfortable in their enhanced roles and it has

shown throughout the spring and summer. I lean heavy on the impact and influence Coach Baker has had on m as the staff continues to build off the foundation we've been building during his tenure at Lake City.”

Cook is a 33-year coaching veteran who was most recently the football head coach at East

Clarendon. He will be coaching linebackers. Brogdon has over 20 years of experience and is another

former EC head coach as well as a Lake City head coach. He will coach quarterbacks.

Graham is a 25-year coaching veteran who is the assistant head coach and will coach running

backs. “Coach Graham's veteran presence and knowledge is a huge asset to Lake City,” Estep said.

McFadden is a 16-year coaching veteran. He will step into the role of defensive coordinator this

year and will coach the defensive line.

“He brings a wealth of defensive knowledge to the staff and has been a major part of defensive

success in years past,” Estep said.

Barron has 16 years of coaching experience as well. He will coach the secondary this season after

coaching outside linebackers last year. “He is a great motivator and brings a ton of energy to the

program,” Estep said.

Reynolds is the “baby” of the staff as he is entering his fifth season. He will coach the offensive

linemen. :

“Coach Reynolds is an alumni of the program and does a great job training our bigs,” Estep said.

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
