Clarendon Hall owns 2-5 record as it begins play in SCISA Region 1-Class A
Saints play host to Carolina Academy in region opener on October 9
Summerton – The times are few and far between in SCISA football that a team plays its region schedule in consecutive games to end the regular season. In most cases, the region tilts are spread out over the course of the year.
That is not the case for Clarendon Hall this season. The Saints are 2-5 after falling to Pee Dee Academy 40-16 on October 2, all of them non-region contests. They will figure out their seeding for the upcoming Class A state playoffs with their three Region 1 games over the remainder of October.
“We're in a must-win situation,” said Clarendon Hall head coach Shane Wallace. “I’m telling the kids these next three games really matter.”
Ini fact, each of the Region 1 teams will be playing their region contests over the course of the final four Fridays of the regular season. The other region teams are Carolina Academy, Lee Academy and Dillon Christian School.
Carolina and Lee both own 2-5 records like Clarendon Hall and are under first-year head coaches. Dillon Christian is 5-2 and ranked second in the latest High School Sports Report SCISA Class A poll.
The Saints are scheduled to play host to Carolina Academy on October 9. After a bye week, they will be at home against Lee on October 23. On October 30, they will hop on Interstate 95 that runs right by the school and head north to Dillon to face the Warriors.
“We're not where we want to be right now,” said Wallace, who is in his second season at Clarendon Hall. Compared to where the Saints were at this point last year, the change has been tremendous.
Clarendon Hall was in the throes of a second straight 0-10 season, one in which it was outscored 439-59. The Saints came into this season riding a 21-game losing streak.
Clarendon Hall took care of the losing streak immediately, opening the year with a 27-0 triumph over Thomas Heyward Academy. Junior quarterback Joey Hatchell, who missed most of last season with an injury, completed 9 of 16 passes for 100 yards and ran for three touchdowns and 18 yards.
While the Saints have dealt with injury problems, Hatchell has remained healthy. “He’s showing steady improvement,” Wallace said.
Someone else who has remained healthy is junior running back Andrew Pritcher. He was the standout in the Saints’ other victory, a 30-21 triumph over Beaufort Academy. He ran for 279 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries, including a 90-yard scoring run.
Leading the way for Pritcher was the blocking of guard Harrison Denny. He had nine pancake blocks against Beaufort.
“Our running game is still there,” Wallace said. “They’ve done a really good job.”
The Saints have scored 141 points. The only game where they were shut down came in a 50-0 loss to Calhoun Academy, the No. 2 team in AA.
Wallace said he’s been able to see a change in the demeanor of his players this year.
“I think the boys are more into it this year,” he said. “I've got several who are bought in. You can see it because of the way they look after these games where they’ve played so hard. It’s not so much about winning, it’s that you hate to lose.”
