BHP's Marshall Bolden Jr. selected to SCBCA AAA boys bsketball All-State team
Seventh-grader Ivy Brooks selected to All-Region 1 girls basketball team
Honea Path – Senior guard Marshall Bolden Jr. was named to the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association AAA boys All-State team while leading Belton-Honea Path High School to the Region 1-AAA championship.
Bolden, who was also named the Region 1 Player of the Year, averaged 15.5 points per game, which was second on the team to sophomore Eugene Robinson’s 15.9. Bolden also averaged 4.2 rebounds and a team high 3.0 assists.
The Bears were 17-9 on the season but 8-1 in region play, which gave them the region crown. They rolled to an easy 82-47 win over Palmetto in the first round of the state playoffs, but fell to St. Joseph’s 57-51 in the second round.
Along with leading BHP in scoring, Robinson also led in rebounding at 5.6. Other key contributors were junior Zi Miller-Brown and senior Dajuan Walker. Miller-Brown averaged 11.1 points, 2.7 assists and 2.0 steals. Walker averaged 9.7 points, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals.
SEVENTH-GRADER IVY BROOKS ALL-REGION
While the Belton-Honea Path boys were led by a veteran in Bolden, the BHP girls were led by a player who still has another year of education to receive before she is in high school.
Seventh-grader Ivy Brooks was named to the Region 1 All-Region team. Brooks averaged 11.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.2 steals. per game.
The Bears finished the year with a 7-13 overall record and a 2-6 mark in region play. They lost to Cha[man in the first round of the playoffs.
“We had an up-and-down season, but I can say that we got better as a team as the season progressed, and players made major individual improvements,” said head coach Marshall Bolden, the All-State boys performer’s father. “I feel like we did the necessary things to get our program headed in the right direction for the future.
“I’m looking forward to getting started with our offseason activities so that we can make more improvements and become a better team than we were this season.”
BHP returns all but two players from its roster.
DAVID CRANE NEW FOOTBALL COACH
David Crane has been hired by Belton-Honea Path as its new football coach. The announcement was made on February 23.
Crane takes over for Russell Blackston, who led Belton-Honea Path to back-to-back AAA Upper State championships and was at the school for 16 years.
Crane comes to BHP after spending seven years at Seneca. He led the Bobcats to a 10-2 record this season and finished with a 43-30 record during his stay. Crane’s career record is 78-94. That includes a stint at Greenville.
