Wilson Hall track and field teams both finish fourth in SCISA Division I state meet

Molly Jones, Aubrey Payne, Hugh Humphries, boys 4x800 team win state titles

           Sumter – Both the Wilson Hall School boys and girls track and field teams finished fourth in the Division I state meet on May 4 at Porter-Gaud School in Charleston.

 

           The Wilson Hall girls finished fourth with 74 points. Heathwood Hall won state with 113 points while Porter-Gaud was second with 103 and Hammond School was third with 97.

 

           The Wilson Hall boys finished with 63 points. Porter-Gaud won with 106 followed by Heathwood Hall with 94 and Hammond with 74.

 

           The Lady Barons had two state champions in Molly Jones and Aubrey Payne. Jones finished first in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 1 minute, 06.21 seconds. Payne won the shot put with a throw of 33 feet, 8 inches.

 

           Payne had a great meet, finishing second in the discus and fourth in the javelin. Maggie Norris and McKinley Bath scored points with fifth-place finishes in the discus and javelin, respectively.

 

           Jones scored points with a sixth-place finish in the 100 hurdles.

 

           Bath had a second-place finish in the high jump, while Camryn Wilmes was second in the triple jump.

 

           The 4x400-meter relay team of Ella Still, Emma Howle, Jane McAdams and Abby Bradley finished third, while the 4x8 relay team of Ellis Coker, Campbell Williams, Jane Foley and Bradley finished fourth. Another fourth-place finisher was McAdams in the long jump.

 

           Bailey Flemming was fifth in the triple jump, Mary Ellen Thorne was fifth in the 3,200-meter run, and Bradley was fifth in the 400-meter dash.

 

           Others who scored points with sixth-place finishers were Clara Hulshizer in the pole vault and McAdams in the 400 hurdles.


            The only individual state champion for the boys team was
Hugh Humphries in the high jump He won with a jump of 06-02. Teammate Daniel Burton finished second.

 

           The 4x8 team of Gavin Getz, Caulder Williamson, Jennings Frerichs and Jack Gratz won in a time of 8:33.69.

 

Humphries also placed second in the triple jump. In fact, Wilson Hall grabbed the next four spots for points. Knox Buxton was third, Shep Vincent was fourth, Alex Johnson was fifth and Burton was sixth.

 

Others who finished fourth were Sam Tristan in the discus and Tucker Burnette in the 400 hurdles, Williamson was fifth in the 800. Sixth-place finishers were Gibb Wilder in the pole vault and Burnette in the 110 hurdles

 

           The 4x1 team of Burnette, Miles Van Patten, Harris Naylor and Blake VanPatten and the 4x400 team of Burnette, Ben Rabon. Frerichs and Gratz both finished sixth.

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
