Fox Creek wins three region championships in spring sports

Baseball's Anderson, softball's Owens All-State selections

North Augusta Fox Creek High School had a successful spring sports season, winning three region championships, four Region Player of the Year honors and three Coach of the Year awards.

 

The Region 3-AA championships for the Predators were in boys golf, girls soccer and baseball.

 

Jonathon Godbee was the Region Player of the Year for golf, while Mark Thomas was the Coach of the Year. Godbee was joined on the All-Region team by Joel Carroll and Patrick Carroll.

 

Fox Creek finished fourth in the AA state tournament. Godbee led the way with a 36-hole score of 158 (78-80). Joel Carroll shot 161 (84-77), Westin Carroll shot 163 (80-83) and Patrick Carroll shot 164 (81-83).

 

Madison Wells Bunting was the girls soccer Region Player of the Year and Jason Spinks was the Region Coach of the Year. Joining Bunting on the All-Region team were Alissa Claire Rhodes, Analise Bell, Jessica Olson, Azelinn Hall and Avery Morgan. Fox Creek advanced to the second round of the state playoffs.

 

In baseball, Bradley Anderson was the Player of the Year and Roby Gillespie was the Coach of the Year. Other All-Region selections were Will Fountain, Chance Weathersbee, Will Frischmann, Hank Greene and Jackson Wright. The Predators went 20-5-1 and advanced to the AA Upper State tournament.

 

Anderson was also selected to the South Carolina Baseball Coaches Association AA All-State team. Anderson had a 5-1 win-loss record late in the season with a 2.26 earned run average and 80 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings pitched. He batted .389 with six runs batted in and 13 runs scored.

 

Weathersbee batted .432 with nine doubles, a triple, two home runs and 24 RBI. Frischmann batted .397 with seven doubles, two triples, two homers and 22 RBI, Fountain batted .306 with 23 RBI, Greene batted .329 and Wright batted .327.

 

Zoey Owens was named the Region Player of the Year for softball. She was joined on the All-Region team by Paden Quinn, Hollymarie Guerrieri, Addyson Snellings and Hannah Andrews. Fox Creek went 13-9 and reached the championship round of its district tournament.

 

Owens, an All-State pick by the South Carolina Association of Women’s Sports, batted .473. Guerreri hit .388, Andrews .459, Quinn .327 and Snellings .188. Snellings was also the Predators’ pitcher.

 

Making the boys soccer All-Region team for the Predators were Thomas Kerekanich and Juan Rodrigues. Fox Creek reached the second round of the playoffs.

 

Boys tennis player T.O. Mundy qualified for the Class A-AA-AAA individual state championships.

 

The boys track and field team had two athletes reach the AA state meet, Tripp Crigger in the 1,600-meter run and Caine Goodson in the high jump.

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
