Mcmanus Set To Assume Role As Athletic Director At Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach High finally filled an opening for athletic director after more than a year, hiring of long-time coach and administrator Hal McManus.

Myrtle Beach – A period indecision and flux came to an end as Myrtle Beach High finally filled an opening for athletic director after more than a year.
Earlier this spring, the Horry County school board approved the hiring of long-time coach and administrator Hal McManus to take over running the successful athletic programs at Myrtle Beach. He replaces interim athletic director Joe Quigley, who served the last year in place of former athletic director John Cahill.
"The 2026-27 school year will mark the beginning of my 32nd year in education," McManus said in a statement. "I have been in athletic administration for 26 years and a varsity head basketball coach for 24 years... My wife [Alison] and I are excited to join the Myrtle Beach family."
McManus has an extensive background, previously being athletic director at Spartanburg, Boiling Springs and Liberty High Schools before his current tenure at Broome, which began in 2023.
He was named the Region III-3A Athletic Director of the Year in 2025; he is the son of longtime South Carolina coach Harold McManus. Together, they are the only father-son duo in South Carolina history to have both won basketball state championships.
Hal's 2005 Broome High team won the Class 2A state championship.
McManus was the boys basketball coach at Conway High from 1997-1999. He was hired as the Socastee athletic director in the summer of 2020, but left the school in less than one year.
Myrtle Beach Principal Kristin Altman sent a note to the Myrtle Beach High School community on Monday night, officially confirming the news.
"We are beyond excited to welcome Hal McManus as our new Athletic Director, bringing with him a distinguished career in both athletic leadership and basketball coaching across South Carolina," the statement said in part. "Most recently serving as Athletic Director and Head Boys Basketball Coach at Gettys D. Broome High School, Coach McManus has built a reputation for excellence defined by competitive success, program development, and strong relationships with students and staff."
