Batesburg-Leesville, S.C. – The W.W. King Academy Knights coached by Zach Matthews finished the 2026 season with an explosive rally to pull out a 14-11 win over Marlboro Academy to claim the SCISA Class A Baseball Title.
The Knights trailed 4-11 going into the fifth inning and had a five- run rally to trail 9-11 going into the sixth inning where they scored five more runs to claim the 14-11 victory for the Championship.
“It was nice getting back on the diamond to coach this year,” said Matthews. “We struggled early starting the season 1-3. The guys stayed on the course all year. The more we played the better we got. We had an 8-game winning streak and won 10 of the last 12 games to finish 14-6 for the season.”
Coach Matthews was blessed with a roster of Champions that had earlier in the school year completed a 12-0 Championship in football. All except for three seniors are expected back next school year (2026-27) to defend those titles. The three seniors leaving as Champions are Smith Kirby, Zed Watkins and Wyatt Burbank.
This year’s five juniors Luke Harvey, Elijah Hutto, Colton Black, Casen Buzhardt and Landell Anderson will give Coach Matthews strong senior leadership as the Knights hope for another title.
Next year the Juniors will be Grayson Rikard and Joshua Oswald. The Sophomores will be Jackson Hutto, Drayton Wannamaker, Isaiah Doolittle, Tucker McGinty and Miles Atkins. Ayden Brown, Berton Aull and Walker Buzhardt will be the freshmen coming up from the middle school roster.
Coach Matthews for baseball and Coach Brian Kneece for football hopes to hold this group of young men together for the 2026-27 school year
