North Charleston – The Fort Dorchester Boys Volleyball team enters the week in second place for 5A Region 5.
The Patriots are 10-11 on the season with a 6-1 record in region matches. Their only region loss came to Summerville, which handed the Fort a 3-1 loss Sept. 16 in The Firehouse. Fort Dorchester has a chance to avenge that loss at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 7 in North Charleston.
“We are putting things together,” said Fort Dorchester coach Elizabeth Simmons. “We are really young and a bit inexperienced with a lot of brand-new players, but we are looking good and not to be underestimated.”
The Patriots only had three varsity lettermen return from last year. The rest of the team is new to playing volleyball or coming up from the JV squad.
The only two seniors, Aaron Drake and Daniel Schenk, are also team captains. The other returner is junior Logan Rodriguez.
Schenk, Jace Sturman and Randon Parker are leading the team’s hitters. Tyler Holden and Logan Tran anchor the middle of the net. Drake is the starting setter.
“We lost to Hanahan in five sets and they have a good team,” Simmons said. “We are finding our grove. On the backrow freshman Ace Avellar is killing it and Logan Rodriguez is killing it at the Libero spot. We are finding what works and putting things together.”
Other members of the team are Heitor De Souza, Nathan Nguyen, Aaron Isringhaus, Noah Brothers, and James Young.
Fort Girls
The Fort Girls are 11-9 with a 4-5 mark in the region. However, last week they avenged a prior loss to Ashley Ridge so the Patriots can rise in the region rankings with a strong finish to the season.
“Things have been going well,” said Fort Dorchester coach Megan Foley. “We played some great competition early in the season and consistently improved. This is a talented group of girls who are hungry. We have a heavy load of seniors, but everybody contributes. It’s nice to see all the hard work come together.”
Fort Dorchester has seven seniors to lean on.
“Senior Izzy Kerce, our right side hitter, is one of our captains and a great leader,” Foley said. “We lost our long-time setter, but senior Sophie Bobola has stepped up and puts the ball where it needs to go and is great defensively.”
Outside hitters Sarah Mitchell, Lilly Bruton and Leslie Gunnoe, as well as defensive specialist Jada Heard and Libero Ari Loudermilk are also seniors.
“Sarah is a quick player and can play both front and back row,” Foley said. “Lilly is a strong outside who is able to shut down opponents with a solid block.”
Some underclassmen are also making a big impact.
Junior Cailyn Ashline is the other team captain. She has transferred from a hitter last season to a defensive specialist and Libero.
Sophomore middle hitter/blocker Hailey Walden leads the team in blocks and service aces. Freshman hitter Konner Haupt leads in hitting percentage. Junior middle hitter/blocker Megan Thomas brings solid play offensively and defensively.
“On paper this is a strong group, but to see it translate into victories has been really fun to watch,” Foley said.
