FCS girls split first 12 games

Florence – The Florence Christian School boys basketball team got off to a 6-6 start. There

have been ups and downs, and Eagles head coach Clay Bochette understands why.

“I;m pleased with the effort, toughness and togetherness of this group,” Bochette said “However,

inconsistency is what has plagued our young team so far. We will need to improve in this area to compete

in our region and the state playoffs.”

FCS is indeed young. It returns one starter in junior Taylor Greene, while the other starters are

sophomore Hayden Schwab and freshmen Riley Minton, Sullivan Hardy and Brayden Berry.

If you only have one returning starter, Greene is a good one to have. Greene is averaging 19. 8

points 4.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

“Taylor is off to a great start for us,” Bochette said. “His leadership and experience are vital to the

success of our team.”

Minton is averaging 9.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.7 steals. Hardy is averaging 8.3

points, 4.2 rebonds and 2.4 assists, Berry is averaging 4.5 points and 3.1 rebounds, and Schwab is

averaging 2.1 points and a team high 5.4 rebounds.

Junior Kayden Parker was in the starting lineup averaging 5.2 points but is out with a knee

injury.

“We’re hopeful to get him back soon,” Bochette said. “We need him healthy as we head into

region play (which began on January 7).”

FCS GIRLS OFF TO 6-5 START

While the boys team is very inexperienced, the Florence Christian girls are experienced.

Although there is just one senior in the starting lineup, the entire starting five returns from last year.

The returning starters are sophomore Emerson Poston, juniors Anna Kate Huggins, Demi Greene and

Leah Lambert and senior Elise Hicks.

Veteran head coach Neil Minton is pleased with the Eagles’ start to the season.

“We have played fine,” Minton said. “We’re dealing with a couple of injuries right now, but it

will only make us stronger.”

Poston leads Florence Christian in scoring at 8.8, rebounding at 10.8, steals at 4.4 and assists at

2.0. Greene isn’t far behind in scoring with an 8.6 average to go with 3.0 rebounds. Huggins is averaging

5.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.5 steals, Lambert is averaging 2.9 points and 3.9 rebounds, and Hicks is

averaging 1.0 points.

Other members of the team are sophomore Lyla Broach, sophomore Charlotte Granger,

sophomore Lana Claire Jordan and senior Karley Hickson.

Minton said the Eagles need to continue to improve in the fundamentals.

“We have to protect the ball and rebound,” he said. “We just have to get better every day and play

with urgency.”

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
