South Florence’s Robinson, Perry, West Florence’s Eliason All-State selections

West Florence finishes sixth in AAAAA Division II girls track state meet

  Florence – The South Florence High School baseball team made a run to the AAAA lower state championship series, losing to eventual state champion Airport.

 

  The Bruins finished the year with a 20-12 record. They were led by senior Brayden Robinson, who was selected to the South Carolina Baseball Coaches Association’s AAAA All-State team.

 

  Robinson had an 8-4 win-loss record and a 1.79 earned run average in 58 2/3 innings pitched. He had 67 strikeouts while allowing 38 hits and 36 walks.

 

  Offensively, Robinson batted .306 with six doubles and led South Florence in runs batted in with 24.

 

  South Florence also had an All-State performer in softball as well in senior Payton Perry.

 

  Perry tossed 145 innings in the circle, finishing with a 1.74 earned run average and an 18-9 record. She had 171 strikeouts while walking just 27.

 

  Perry was also very dangerous at the plate. She batted .383 with six doubles, three triples, five home runs, 28 RBI and 26 runs scored.

 

  The West Florence softball team had its pitcher selected All-State as well. Junior Annie Ruth Eliason was named to the AAAAA Divison II team.

 

  Eliason had a phenomenal 265 strikeouts in 123 innings to go with a 1.37 earned run average. She allowed just 75 hits while walking 47.

 

  Like Perry, Eliason was also strong in the batter’s box. Eliason had a .385 batting average with team highs in home runs with four and runs batted in with 26 to go with four doubles, a triple and 10 runs.

 

West Florence girls finish 6th in AAAAA DII meet

 

  While the West Florence boys track and field team became the first ever AAAAA Division II state champion, the girls didn’t do too bad either.

 

The WF girls had a strong showing in the first ever AAAAA DII state meet held at Spring Valley’s Harry Parone Stadium in Columbia on May 15, finishing sixth overall with 47 points.

 

  Kamya Young led the way for the Knights with a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash and a third-place finish in the 100 dash. She finished in 24.67 seconds in the 200 and 12.03 seconds in the 100.

 

  Kayianna Burroughs placed in three events, the best being a second-place finish in the 800-meter run in a time 2 minutes, 18.84 seconds. She finished fifth in the long jump (5.33 meters) and sixth in the triple jump (11.14m).

 

  Zolia Wierzbicki also had a second-place finish. It came in the javelin with a throw of 39.98 meters.

 

  Cassidie Williams was sixth in the discus (30.14m) and the 4x100-meter relay team finished fourth (48.97 seconds).

 

  The South Florence girls track team scored 16 points in the AAAA state meet on May 16 at Richland Northeast in Columbia, while the boys finished with 10 points.

 

  Karmen Hanks led the way for the Bruin girls with a third-place in the 100-meter hurdles. She finished in a time of 15.20 with teammate Allyson Watson right behind her in fourth place in 15.69.

 

  South Florence’s other points came from the 4x100 relay team, which finished fourth in 49.02.

 

  For the boys, Lennix Valarie had the best finish, coming in third in the high jump in an even 2.0 meters.

 

  Will Wilson III was sixth in the 200 dash in 21.86. Julian Butler got a point with an eighth-place finishing in the 110 hurdles in 15.08.

 

  The Wilson High girls 4x400 relay team won a state title in the AAAA meet. The Tigers won the event in a time of 4:02.52.

 

  Leah Spears finished sixth in the 400 dash in a time of 57.81 to give the Tigers 13 points.

 

  The Wilson boys finished with 16 points with a pair of second-place finishes. Devine Gee was second in the triple jump with a jump of an even 14 meters. The 4x400 relay team was second in 3:20.76.

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
