DeAngelo Adams takes over successful Mullins boys baksetball program
Eric Troy decides to step down after eight seasons and a 127-52 record
Mullins – Mullins High School will have a new head coach in place for its most high-profile sport in the 2026-27 school year.
DeAngelo Adams is the new boys basketball head coach. He is taking over for Eric Troy, who decided to step down after eight seasons in the position. Troy will remain at the school as a teacher.
Troy posted a 127-52 record with the Auctioneers, leading them to the AA lower state championship game on two occasions. One of those came in the just completed season when Mullins went 22-8 overall and won the Region 7 title with an 11-1 record.
Adams comes to Mullins from Williams Middle School in Florence. He was the boys head coach for three years, posting a 40-7 record. He was also head varsity assistant coach for Wilson High.
“I decided Mullin was the right fit for me because it has a strong tradition of excellence, hard work and winning,” said Adams, who played high school ball at West Florence and collegiately at Morris College. “As someone who has played basketball, I know success comes from discipline, teamwork and consistently giving your best effort, qualities that I see reflected in Mullins’ culture.
“I want to be part of a community that sets high standards, values, dedication and is committed to being the best. I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute to that culture while continuing to grow, both personally and professionally.”
Adams obviously isn’t walking into a situation where a major rebuild is needed. Instead, he is inheriting a program that was one of the four best in AA last season. Adams isn’t in awe of the circumstance.
“There’s definitely some pressure, but not much,” he said. “I see it as a positive. When you join a successful program like Mullins, expectations are high because of the standard that’s already been set. As a basketball player I’ve learned to embrace that kind of pressure. It pushes you to work harder, stay disciplined and bring your best every day.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to contribute to that winning culture and do whatever I can to help the program continue its success.”
Lamonte Curry is back for his second season as the athletic director. Marc Lowery will return for his fourth season as the football head coach. The Auctioneers went 3-6 last season.
Mullins will have five returning assistant coaches. Donald Brown will coach wide receivers, Tony Nelson defensive backs, Jeremy Oxendine linebackers and running backs and Mike Davis the defensive line. Johnathan Williams will be back to assist newcomer Matthew Caulder on the offensive line. The other new assistant is RJ Richardson, who will help with defensive backs and wide receivers.
Edward Bears is the only other new coach besides Adams. He will head boys soccer.
The other returning head coaches are Alex White in girls basketball, Cierra Reaves in softball, Johnathan Elliott in baseball. Kireem Liles in volleyball, Taurus Gilchrist in girls track and field and Amara Sturkey in both boys track and cheer.
